“I’m right here.”

More kisses. More goosebumps. “You know what I mean. I feel like sharing you isn’t my strong suit.”

“Are you feeling needy, Mr Clarke?”

“Always for you, sweetheart.” He spins me around and captures my mouth in a kiss that is perfectly soft and claiming. “Come on, let's mingle for a while so I can take you home and eat you up.”

When we open the door to our flat, my eyes are barely open. Tiredness weighs heavy on my bones, I could fall asleep standing. “Come on sleepyhead, let's get you to bed,” Harrison encourages me, one hand behind my back, ushering me through the hall to our bedroom.

“Your sister and her family are amazing, but I’m bone tired.” I yawn.

“Yeah, they’re a lot.” I hear the smile in his voice, even though he’s behind me.

“When Ellie asked if she could keep me, I think I melted a little,” I reply, taking my shoes off at the bedroom door.

“They all loved you. Thank you for playing with them. It means… it means a lot,” he says with equal parts happiness and sadness in his voice. I turn to face him, wrapping my arms around his neck.

“What are you not saying?”

He sighs, running his hands up and down my arms with rapt attention. “Vanessa and I were together for a few years, and I never took her to meet the girls. Deep down, I think I felt like something wasn’t right and I’m glad they never met her because they know you.”

My belly floods with warmth, which then hardens like ice because I’m scared that I’ll break those little girls’ hearts when I leave. But I don’t want to. Hell, I don’t even think I want to leave the man in front of me, let alone his family. Familiarity is a funny thing. It's not something I’m used to with relationships. I have people who I care about and love. My brothers, Jess, Nora and Seren, my old housekeeper. But to have someone who’s constantly at your side because they want to be is something I always assumed wouldn’t happen for me. That deep seated familiarity, it’s nice. And maybe I want that.

Maybe this doesn’t have to be an agreement, maybe it could just be… us.

Chapter 31

Zoey

“Whydoyoulookso happy?” Sam’s eyes narrow, assessing me. Then he steps into my office fully and shrieks. “Oh my God, did I win the bet? Did you sleep with your husband?” I’ve managed to go all of thirty seconds without thinking about the sex Harrison and I have been having every night for the last several nights and mornings too. But Sam just brought it back to the forefront of my mind.

Oh, who am I kidding? It was always at the forefront of my mind.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I reply, ignoring his accusations.

“You totally did,” he smirks. “Is this what it feels like to win? Gosh, it’s addictive. I feel like I’m floating.” He muses smugness marring his tone.

I look up from my desk. “Look, it’s none of your business. Now go feed some kittens, save a pig or something. I’m busy.” I shoo him away with my hand and go back to my work. My incredibly interesting work that I’m absolutely concentrating on.

He crosses his arms over his broad chest and narrows his brows, pausing. “Ohhh… you like him.”

My cheeks immediately heat, and I tear my gaze from the laptop I was pretending to pay attention to. “I wish everyone would stop assuming that. First Nora, now you. I’m capable of sex without feelings. I’ve been doing it for years.”

“Right, exceptthatwas random strangers.Thisis your husband. You know him, and now… you like him.”

“Sure, I like him as much as I used to like you. As a friend. Which you no longer qualify as because you’re harassing me.”

“You love me and don’t even try to deny it.” He rolls his eyes.

“Maybe I used to love you when you didn’t make bets with your husband about how long it would take for me to fuck my fake husband.”

He smiles, widely. “A bet I’m winning, by the way.”

I scoff, waving him off, but of course, Sam doesn’t take the hint. “You know, that fake husband of yours is at the front desk being flirted with by Lloyd. Said something about updating your software.” I jump up from my seat, ignoring the smug smirk still playing on Sam’s face. “Is that a euphemism for fucking in your office?”

I stomp over to the doorway and bump hips with him as I pass. “I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that.” Sam’s chuckle follows me as I walk down the hallway where eventually, another voice overtakes it. One that is deeper and full of gruff tones. The closer I get, the more my body begins to perk up, knowing I’ll be near him in a matter of seconds. I feel tingly when I hear him. The deep timbre of his laugh, the memory of the way his eyes crinkle when he really lets out a loud laugh. The way—

Ohhhh balls.
