Maybe Idolike my husband.

No, it’s all the orgasms, that’s it. Just sex crazed. Except the way he held me last night was so tender. I’ve never been cuddled like that before, and I liked it. And the fact his family are the most accepting people I’ve met in my life also put a tick in his column. They even added me to a group chat called ‘Operation Wedding do-over’. My heart immediately warmed when I saw it, a sense of belonging filling my chest; the idea that they really care was almost too much. Harrison said they won’t give up either, and I don’t know what that means (nor am I pushing for answers) but I saw his smiles when Cassie sent links for beach wedding venues.

Opening the door, I see Lloyd leaning over the desk, cackling at something Harrison has said as Harrison casually stands against the front desk, both hands in his grey suit trousers, white shirt rolled up, showing me those veins I traced with my fingers last night. Damn, he looks fine. He’s looking at his shoes, smiling because I know the way his face crinkles when he smiles and when he looks up, those brown eyes deepen, and my stomach takes flight.

Yep—I definitely like my husband.

Damn it. I hate it when Sam’s right.

I take small steps because ogling Harrison’s fine form might go against any objectification rules in society but I. Do. Not. Care. The man is hot.

He removes his hands from his pockets and stalks towards me, eating up the space I was trying to keep so I could objectify my husband, but the pace at which he’s making his way to me, I might… oh no, I’m definitely swooning. My stomach swoops to my feet, and when I catch the scent of his aftershave—fresh and clean—I may as well be drooling.

“Hey, sweetheart,” he coos with devastating suave as he bends and kisses me, but that isn’t what he’s doing, he savouring me. Kissing me slowly, deeply. His big, warm hands land on my hips as he pulls me closer, pressing the kiss so deep into my lips that I know that this one will stick with me all freaking day. I daren’t put my hands on him because I know I’ll drag him to my office to ‘update my software’.

When we break apart, he stares at me with a tenderness that I’m not used to and my heart niggles in my chest. “Mmm, I missed you,” he grumbles.

I smile because I can’t stop it even if I try. “You’re cute when you’re needy for me.”

His chest rumbles with a small laugh. “I’m one hundred per cent okay with that.”

Of course he is because he’s so self-assured. It’s one of his most attractive qualities.

“Harrison was just telling me he’s here to update your office software and honestly, I’m glad to be rid of this.” Lloyd gestures to the computer at the front desk, reminding me that he’s there because I definitely forgot we had company.

“I’m also going to get you some new monitors and I need to check out your workspace to make sure you’re using ergonomic office supplies.”

“Oooo, ergonomic office supplies,” I mock and lower my voice to a sultry whisper. “Talk dirty to me, mountain man.”

I smile up at him as he winks, and an unfamiliar feeling of contentment ignites deep in my bones. “Can I show you around first?” I ask, wanting him to see what I’ve worked so hard for.

“I’d love that.”

Taking his hand, I lead him through the hallway and to the double doors. The telltale sounds of the pups yelping and barking excitedly behind the door filter through into the hallway. “Ready?”

He nods, and I open the doors, revealing pens with various dogs; big, small, tall, short, brown, blonde. You name it, we’ve got it. “Wow, Zoey. This is incredible.” His eyes scan over the space, and I can’t help but smile proudly, taking in the state of the art pens each dog has to themselves. Except for Pete and Peggy, who arrived together and are our resident old married couple, they share.

“It’s pretty amazing, right?”

“You did all this?”

“I did,” I reply, walking over to one of the pens with a golden lab, Jelly, inside. Leaning down, I unlock her door and let her say hello to me with big, sloppy licks and paws that have no coordination. “Hey there, beautiful girl. Did you miss me? I missed you.” I rub her ears, watching her eyes close in happiness. “You’re the sweetest girl here, huh? Yes, you are.”

Harrison joins me on the floor, and Jelly’s attention immediately shifts to him as she sniffs all around his neck, barking her approval.

“I know he smells so good, right, girlie?” I agree and she barks again.

Harrison laughs, as we both lower to the floor to pet her and Jelly takes this as an invitation for her to sit in his lap. “She’s beautiful,” he says, stroking her thick fur. “Was she abandoned too?”

I nod. “All the animals here have been found either on the streets, their owners passed, or maybe someone just doesn’t want them.” Emotion lodges in my chest as I stroke Jelly. “It breaks my heart because they just need someone to love them.”

He nods, his hands moving rhythmically down Jelly’s back, too and her eyes close again, that same goofy puppy smile on her face.

“She likes you,” I smile.

We sit fussing over Jelly for a little while longer, and then we stand to walk to the new section of the shelter.

“This part is where I get my daily serotonin.” I swing open the doors and am greeted with a concerto of meows, my heart instantly melting.
