Now I'm standing in a store, aroused and irritated. All of them are looking at me like they want me to say something.

"What?"

Everly smiles. "Nothing."

"I don't know why my father has to have his birthday today," Carter says out of the blue.

While I'm confused by the comment, his wife is not. "You don't need to go to the meeting."

"But I should support Avery."

I frown. "Why?"

"She's presenting a proposal to the city council tonight. She needs our support."

Piper smiles. "Phin, Avery has already told you to chill out about it. She says family comes first, always."

"So, she's proposing something to the city council?"

Carter smiles. "Yeah. Your woman is going to get money for something. Was it the animal shelter?"

Piper nods.

She does spend a lot of time there. Estella told me Avery was keen on building up the social media component for the shelter.

"Well, I gotta get going. Mom's gonna be here today."

"Tell her I said hi," Everly says.

After saying goodbye, I escape, realizing I didn't get to look around the store.

As I head back to my car, I decide to attend tonight's meeting. I have no idea why I need to be there, but Avery will need support, and I want to give it to her.

I start driving back to the house, thinking about Avery and my feelings for her. Less than a week, and I'm losing my mind over the woman. That should scare me, but for some reason, I feel…settled. More than I have felt in a long time. Her crazy behavior seems to calm me on some level.

Once I get home, there's no Meredith waiting for me. I've found it comforting to walk into the house and see her sitting on the bottom stair.

Me:Did you take Meredith somewhere?

Avery:Yes. She's volunteering with me.

Me:You're avoiding me.

Avery:Well, yeah. We both need to make sure we haven't gone insane.

Me:Who are you, and how did you get Avery's phone?

Avery:*middle finger emoji*

Me:Aw, you do like me.

Avery:Go away. I have to work on some TikToks for the new puppies.

I find myself smiling, realizing that I might have lost my mind, but at the moment, I really don't care.
