Just then, Avery glances over the fence at our neighbor’s house.

“He’s watching us.”

I look in the direction of her gaze, and I don’t see anything at first. I mean, don’t get me wrong. The guy is creepy as fuck, and him being at the meeting last night, well, that was just weird. But being weird only means he fits in with Juniper.

“I don’t see anything.”

He’s not in the backyard like last time. In fact, no one is around. It’s a quiet afternoon with the kids in school, and most everyone else is at work. But as I turn to look at Avery, I see movement by one of the curtains. Just a flutter, but it’s enough to have me squinting toward the window. Again, I see nothing. Then, a shadow moves behind the curtain. I blink.

“Tell me everything you know about this guy.”

ChapterThirty-One

Avery

Iopen my mouth to tell everything I know about Creepy Neighbor Dude, but he settles his hand over my mouth. The glare I give him just makes him chuckle.

"Let's do this inside."

I nod because his voice is lower, and damn if that doesn't get me. He's just a shade above baritone, and I feel it beneath my skin every time he talks. It shimmers through me, touching every nerve point I have.

We herd the cats into the house—Meredith isn't happy about that—and I sit at the kitchen table.

"When did he move in?"

"It was about a week after I did. I was surprised he's stayed so long, truthfully. Before him, I think all they had were vacation renters."

He nods, and he starts pacing the kitchen. The stern expression shouldn't get to me, but it does. The slight frown, the dark concentration in his blue eyes… it's a turn-on. I think because when we're in bed together, he has that same look. Only then, I'm the focus. And it's incredible.

My phone buzzes in my pocket.

I pull it out and shake my head.

Liv:I think I lost the bet.

Cora:Of course you did.

Gerri:I'm sleeping.

Cora:Fine, Liv, let's leave Gerri off this discussion.

Gerri:NOOOOOO!

Yeah. Gerri works horrible hours as a doctor in New York, but she always has FOMO if we leave her out of things.

Me:How about y'all get your own sex lives?

Gerri:Too busy saving lives.

Liv:You know I have one.

Cora:I have proof of one. I have four kids.

Me:Four kids means no sex now.

Cora:Pfft. We did it in his patrol car last night.

Me:TMI
