“You’re not to blame for any of this.”

“And neither are you. You saved me today. I wouldn’t have been able to fight him off, even with Meredith’s help.”

She drops her hands as I lean forward, resting my forehead against hers.

“I love you.”

She sighs, but this one is filled with happiness, and it turns my heart over. That sound is so precious. I don’t think anything will ever compare to it. The next thing I know, she proves me wrong with her response.

“I love you too, you weirdo.”

I chuckle, something loosening in my chest. I know that with her, I will always get the honest truth. Iama bit of a weirdo, and I don’t care who knows it.

I straighten. “We need to talk about our future.”

She rolls her eyes. “Can’t we just say our future is with each other?”

“I guess, as long as you know, I will never give you up.”

I bend at the waist and pick her up.

“What are you doing?”

“Carrying you out. It’s that or the wheelchair, and I had a feeling you would rather have this. Get the door.”

Cheers greet us as I step into the waiting room. The place is packed. Everyone seems to be here, from our families to the mayor and his wife to the LOLs.

“What the fuck?” Avery murmurs.

“It made the JSE, and everyone just showed up,” Nancy says, coming our way. “Been busy, O’Bryan.”

Avery settles her head against my shoulder. “A little.”

As everyone tries speaking to her at once, I see Avery wincing. The headache has to be killing her right now.

“Hey, everyone. Avery has a concussion and needs some quiet.” Avery opens her mouth, but I shake my head at her. “How about we do something at the senior center in a day or two? The doc said she needs rest.”

Murmurs of agreement fill the room as her brother and sister step up beside us. The kids hurry up from where Becca Gold is sitting.

“I’ll take care of it. You just tell us when,” Liv says. “Also, we’re going to pick up Mason. He has food for the troops. Your mom and Estella are at the house.”

“Thanks, sis,” Avery says.

Liv’s gaze slides to me, and I see the tears. She mouths the words “Thank you.”

A lump rises in my throat, and I nod. I turn towards the exit, and Trevor steps into the waiting room. Stunned silence greets him.

“Why didn’t you tell me you knew Trevor Smith?” Avery asks.

“I was too busy being irritated by you. And then I was too busy getting my hands on you.”

She flushes, and it is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. “Jon.”

I laugh as I continue to carry her over to Trev. “I find it funny that Avery O’Bryan is embarrassed by something. Avery, this is Trevor Smith. Trev, this is Avery O’Bryan, the love of my life.”

Something flares in Trevor’s green gaze, something close to envy, but it disappears before I can figure out what it is.

“Avery and I know each other.”
