“Exactly.”

I open the door, and Meredith prances out onto the patio. She moves over to the middle of the yard and into the sun. She likes to lay out there and soak up the heat. I putter around the garden, enjoying the mums now in full bloom. All the while, I feel as if someone is watching me. It irritates me, and I keep looking around, but there’s no one there.

Just nerves, I tell myself, but I decide that I need to check out the name of the renter behind me. There is just something off about him. Of course, this could be because I’ve had no sleep and had an incident last night. If I’m going to make it to Estella’s tonight, I should nap. With that thought, I head in, calling Meredith. A nap is definitely in order.

ChapterSix

Jon

Iroll my shoulders and look at myself in the mirror. I can’t believe my grandmother is making me go through this ridiculous meeting. That squatter needs to go, and my grandmother needs to understand that.

If she doesn’t, hopefully, the background check I have my staff working on will turn something up. I just have a feeling Avery O’Bryan is after something. While my grandmother is probably one of the sharpest businesswomen in the world, she is getting older. Avery is cute enough that she might have weaseled her way into my grandmother’s good graces.

Thinking about Avery has my entire body reacting. My pulse ticks up a beat, my cock twitches, and my palms grow sweaty.

My phone buzzes, breaking into my thoughts.

Trev:Please tell me you’re going to be in NYC soon.

Trevor Smith is an old friend. I rebuilt an app for their hotel business—one of many of their companies. Still, he’s grounded, mainly due to his time in the military. Now, he’s the CEO of his family’s business and is always onTMZand other vulture sites.

Me:Nope.

Trev:Way to support your best friend.

Me:I’m touched. I didn’t think you had any friends.

Trev:*gif-eddie-murphy-gumby-shame-on-you*

I smile. Don’t get me wrong. We are an odd set of friends, I guess. We both grew up privileged. His much more than mine, but he’s one of those dudes who feel comfortable being photographed and talked about. I would rather not deal with that at all.

When I don’t respond, my phone vibrates with a call from him.

“What is it, Trev?”

“I was hoping you would be up to a weekend out.”

As much as Trev seems to fit into the social life of Manhattan, he needs a break from it. I get it. He’s in his thirties, runs a massive family business, and has constant paparazzi following him. The one outdoor activity I really like is fishing. Not sure why, but I love it, and so does Trev.

“You can go fishing by yourself. I’m busy getting my house back.”

“Wait, what?”

I sigh. This is what comes from my orderly life being disrupted. First, that man my mother is moving in with, and then the lack of sleep last night. I do not like being here in my grandmother’s house. And besides, that’smyhouse. I want it back.

“My grandmother rented out my house here in Juniper.”

“What the fuck are you doing there?”

Spoiler alert, Trev grew up in the best schools, including prep schools and Harvard, but he was also in the military. His vocabulary is worse than mine.

“I had to get out of town. You know I can work anywhere.”

“Why didn’t you come here?”

Good question, although I’m pretty sure a lot of it has to do with the media. I want to avoid them. Hanging around Trevor Smith would do the exact opposite of that. No matter how careful he is, he always gets found out.

“I need to work, not go to a city so busy it hurts my head.”
