Page 16 of Imperfect Love

There’s a long beat of silence. Trev runs his family’s business because he’s smart, not because it’s a birthright. It’s one of the reasons I think we became friends when I built an app for the hotel arm of their business. That and I didn’t give a damn about his money. I’m pretty sure it’s why he’s probably closer to his old Army buddies than he is with the socialite set of Manhattan.

“What happened?”

“Sienna. She wanted more, and I said no. There might have been a little light stalking. So, I left town.”

Yes, avoidance is my middle name when it comes to sticky personal situations. That’s about all I learned from my father.

“Let’s table that for another time. How did you lose your house in Juniper? I had no idea you owned property in that town you claim to hate.”

“I don’t own it. My grandmother does, but it’s where I stay when I come to town. She rented it out to some idiot.”

“There’s more to this story.”

I sigh. I really don’t want to tell him what happened. It’s embarrassing that I was taken down by a woman who probably weighs 120 pounds soaking wet.

“I showed up last night, not realizing my grandmother had rented it out and got attacked.”

“Attacked.”

“Yes, the woman renting the house came flying down the stairs and tackled me.”

Trev doesn’t hesitate. He laughs out loud.

“Damn, Howard, I had no idea so much happened in that little town.”

“Nothing happened. Josh showed up in time to explain who we both were—”

“Who’s Josh?”

“The sheriff.”

“You called the cops on her.”

“No, she called the cops when she thought someone was breaking in.”

“Okay, she must have been a bruiser to take you down.”

I’m not built with muscles. More lean than bulky. One of my girlfriends had claimed I had a swimmer’s body. But I’m over six feet and solid.

“No. She was kind of tiny and curvy.” I close my eyes and try not to react to the memory, but it’s useless. I shouldn’t think of her that way, but I can’t help it. All those curves pressing against me were more erotic than anything that’s happened to me lately, and I have had sex in the last month. Even now, my entire body is tingling.

I don’t tingle.

“What was that?”

I open my eyes. “What?”

“There was something in your voice.”

A knock pulls me away from the conversation.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Another bark of a laugh. “Sure, Howard.”

I open the door and find my cousin Nancy standing there. “What’s up, buttercup?”

Most of my relatives on my father’s side of the family irritate the living hell out of me. Nancy is the exception.
