“I looked him up on the Internet. I’ve seen pictures of him.” Another murmur from Mason. “No, love, you are the only man for me.”

“So, you see my problem. He has to leave.”

“You can control yourself.”

“You say I have no self-control.”

“You don’t when it comes to cereal or chocolate or coffee. But you’ve always been a bit reserved in your relationships. At least since you dated Chet. Just ignore Jon until he goes away. Nancy says he never sticks around here for long, so I assume he’ll be gone soon.”

“You’re right.” I release a breath I had no idea I had been holding onto. “Besides, I have a lot to do.”

“Yeah?”

“I’m working at the senior center, and then there’s that dude renting the house out back.”

“What guy?”

“He’s renting the house behind mine, and he gives me the creeps.”

“Wait, maybe you need to talk to Josh.”

“Naw. I’m sure everyone would tell me I was imagining it.”

That’s what they tell me most of the time when I think someone is watching me. I’ve always had an active imagination, and with my interest in Murder, Death, Kill shows, it just goes crazy.

“Have you talked to him?”

“No.”

“But you think he’s a creep?”

“Yeah. Don’t worry about it. I have Meredith to protect me.”

“She’s a cat. What is she going to do?”

“Her ancestors were tigers. She is fierce.”

Said fierce cat rolls over on her back for a belly rub.

“Okay. Just promise me if you have any other worries about the neighbor that you go to Josh.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s the sheriff.”

“No. I mean, why are you saying that?”

“As goofy as you are, little sister, you read people very well.”

“Okay. But I haven’t talked to the guy.”

“Still.”

“I said okay.” I sigh. “I need coffee and don’t want Mr. Egg White to drink it all.”

“Egg white?”

“That’s what I’m calling Jon.”
