“Listen, I just wanted to let you know what’s happening in the real world.TMZis reporting—”

“Nancy called. I have the PR folks on it.”

“Well, then, I’ll let you go. I have a department meeting in a few minutes. Talk to you soon.”

“Love you.”

“Love you, too.”

Once we hang up, I decide to get to work. I came here for a reason, to get away for some peace and quiet to work.

ChapterTwelve

Avery

Istare in disbelief at my sister. It’s not often any of my sisters can pull one over on me, but Liv has done it with little to no fanfare.

“You did what now?”

“I invited Jon over for dinner.”

I frown at her. “Why didn’t you tell me this before I came over here tonight?”

“I didn’t think you would object to it.”

That’s a damn dirty lie, and she knows it. Liv is horrible at lying, and right now, she’s looking everywhere in the dining room to avoid making eye contact with me.

“You thought wrong.”

“He’s probably on his way over.”

“Yeah, he is. Why would you do this to me?”

“We needed another dude,” Sammy, my nephew, says,

I glance down at him, then drop to his level. “What? I thought I was your partner in crime, buddy.”

“You are. But Mason says this is a girl house, and having another dude around will even things out.”

I look up at my sister, who’s smothering a laugh. And just for that, I’m thankful. Until she hooked up with Mason, Liv took too much on and was way too serious. Now she laughs more easily, and she seems lighter somehow. That’s what happens when you find your soul mate.

My heart sighs. It was so sweet watching her fall for Mason, and now, he makes her happy.

“I think I need to chat with Mason,” I say just as there’s a knock at the door. Houdini starts barking and running toward the front door. Meredith—who has been following the insane golden retriever around like he’s her best friend—trots along with him. It’s like she’s forgotten she’s a cat.

“Oops, too late. Go let your guest in.”

“He’s not my guest.”

“Then your roommate.”

“Housemate. We aren’t sharing a room.”

She smiles. “If you say so.”

But before I can respond, I hear Sammy talking to someone. Yep, that boy loves to greet anyone at the front door.

“Are there any adults here?”
