Page 42 of Imperfect Love

“That’s debatable,” I say as I enter the hallway. My breath catches because, well, it just does whenever I see this man. How does he look so handsome and romantic when I know he has the personality of a dead mouse? He should look like a ghoul, but instead, he’s temptation dressed in jeans.

“Jon, this is Sammy, my nephew. Sammy, your mother has told you not to open the door to strangers.”

“Yeah, but I know what Mr. Howard looks like. He’s all over the JSE.”

“I am?” Jon asks.

“He is?” I ask at the same time.

I hadn’t had time to partake in the newest posts, mainly because I wanted to avoid anyone posting about me.

“Yep. Why did you beat him up, Avery?”

I choke on the laugh bubbling up in my throat. Jon hides his irritation well, but I can see his mouth twitch downward. There’s something kind of adorable that he’s standing there looking awkward AF. I don’t know why I take pity on him, but I do.

“I didn’t beat him up. I fell on top of him.”

Sammy turns his head. “But why did you do that?”

“It’s a long story,” I say, trying to get Sammy to move off the subject. “Do you know who Jon is?”

“Yeah, a dead man.”

“What?” Jon asks.

“There are all kinds of things posted on the JSE about how they all hate him.”

I sigh. “Those are the teenagers because they got caught and reported on the JSE.” I look up at Jon. “You might want to watch your back. They are furious about the way the LOLs use the app.”

“Good to know.”

“Is this a meeting of the minds?”

I turn and find Liv standing there, a glass of wine in her hand. First, that annoys me because I don’t have one, and I definitely need some wine. Second, I know that Mason put it in her hand and urged her out of the kitchen.

“No. Sammy was just keeping Jon up to date on the JSE.”

She frowns. “How do you know what’s going on there?”

“On your phone.”

Then he turns and marches off to the kitchen.

“I have to get better about using a stronger passcode.”

I shake my head. “He’s lying. He uses your iPad. Just an FYI.”

She sighs, and I marvel that she’s not having a meltdown. Before meeting Mason, she would have fretted over not being a good enough mom.

“You must be Jon Howard. It’s so nice to meet you. Nancy has all kinds of wonderful things to say about you.”

I move out of the way so Jon can step into the house. His shoulder brushes against me. Just that one little touch sends heat radiating through my body. It’s then that I notice the bottle of wine in his hand.

“Nancy said this is one of your favorites from Russo Winery. I wasn’t sure what we were having tonight, so I figured that was the best bet.”

He’s all smooth and smiley for Liv, and it irritates me.

“Thank you for this. Mason’s out back. Everything else is done. He said he needed to know how you liked your steak.”
