I hate that she’s so close to the truth. I want to do something else, but this is all I have ever known, and it makes me a lot of money.

“You’re hanging out in Juniper and not doing much.”

She offers me a small smile. “That’s not a good defense.”

I want to say more, but Mrs. Petersen steps up to the table to gossip. I tuck my thoughts on Avery and her perceptive comments in the back of my mind. I will finally have some time to myself in my house, and I can’t wait.

ChapterEighteen

Avery

Ihate shopping. Let me rephrase that. I hate shopping in person, and I really hate shopping for clothes. I think most of it comes from the fact that I’m oddly shaped. I don’t mean I have an extra foot weird, but I’m short and curvy. It’s hard to find something that looks right on me. Also, a girl can find all the PJs she needs to wear online.

“How about this one?” Liv asks, holding up another dress. It’s a slip of a dress, perfect for her. It’s a deep shade of blue, almost purple, and yes, the color would look good on me. The shape of the dress…not so much.

All my sisters are tall. They have long bodies that are proportioned properly. I’m way curvier with a long torso and short legs. It isn’t easy finding things that look good on me.

The long sheath is simple, and it would accentuate Liv’s subtle curves.

“You would look great in that.”

Liv frowns. “You would too.”

“No, she wouldn’t,” Savannah, our sister-in-law, says. She’d found a chair somehow and dragged it over to watch us shop. I smile at her. Savannah is blunt. I think it comes from running a kitchen for so many years.

“See.”

Liv looks at her. “That’s rude.”

She shrugs and digs into her purse. She pulls out a bag of nuts. Savannah just hit her third trimester, and feeding her is a priority. I thought I was the hangriest of hangry people, but I’m nothing compared to Savannah. Fritz says he just throws food at her when she gets hungry because she scares him.

“That would look good on you.”

Liv shakes her head. “I don’t want to spend the money for one night. I have other dresses.”

I frown. I thought we were shopping for both of us. I know that Liv has to watch her money, but a dress for a formal event—the first one she’s attended in a long time other than our brother’s wedding—isn’t going to break her. I look at the tag. It’s expensive, but it’s on clearance. I open my mouth to tell her I’ll pay for it as an early birthday present, but Savannah beats me to the punch.

“My treat. Buy what you want. Both of you.”

We glance at Savannah, who is still munching on her snack and making appreciative sounds. Savannah is an odd duck, so she fits in our family just fine. Tall, beautiful, and intelligent, she’s way too good for Fritz, but he knows it, so I guess that’s okay. Long, thick, black hair frames a stunning face, and she’s way hotter than me, even pregnant. In fact, she’s one of those women who glows. She’s a former chef who hosts a travel show and is a bit of a celebrity.

“We can’t let you do that,” Liv says.

“You have to. I want to, plus I’m loaded. Pick out anything, and I’ll buy it.” Savannah isn’t exaggerating. She would be a billionaire if she didn’t give so much of her money away. This is just like her too. She loves to help just about anyone, friends and family. That’s why I can take her bluntness. Under that hard exterior is a sweet woman.

I look at Liv. “Sheisloaded. You’re going to support Mason. Pick something out for him.”

“Try on the dress. Avery and I will look for a dress for her while you’re changing.”

Liv looks between us, her hands tightening around the dress. She still has issues doing things for herself, but she’s improving. It helps that Mason spoils her. She nods and heads off to the changing rooms.

I look over at my sister-in-law, who is attempting to stand. I rush over to help. “You’re good.”

“Comes from running a kitchen. People need to understand that I run the show. Once they know who the Alpha is, Betas get in line.”

Savannah ran her family’s restaurant business for years before she became a travel host onThe Adventure Network. I smile as we start looking through the dresses.

“You hate shopping.” Not a question.
