“Go.”

I take the dress and stomp off to the changing room. I am not the svelte goddess of the quill—Taylor Swift, if you didn’t know who I was talking about. I have the exact opposite type of body, but there was no way I wouldn’t do as my sister-in-law ordered. Savannah kind of scares me.

I’m definitely going to have to buy another bra for this. I get it on, but can’t zip it up, so I call Liv. She knocks on my door, and as soon as I open it, she gasps.

“Oh, that’s perfect.”

I look in the mirror and realize the gold dress brings out the gold in my eyes. The feel of the dress against my skin is fantastic.

She steps behind me and does up the zipper. I feel like…a princess.

I mean, not an actual princess, but I feel special. The neckline does dip down, but not as much as I thought. The way it cinches in at the waist…I look like a hot woman from the fifties or something.

“Of course, Savannah helped you find something perfect.”

I glance at Liv. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” She sniffs.

“What has you almost crying? Are you pregnant?”

“Good God, why would you say that?”

“You’re almost crying.”

She sighs. “This is just…I’m really enjoying doing this with you and with Savannah.”

I feel my heart soften. Out of all the O’Bryan sisters, Liv is the most soft-hearted. She feels the most, even though she is a tough-as-nails former military wife. She’s endured a lot but still gets caught up in these things.

“I like doing this too.”

“We should do it more often.”

“Sure, next time I have a formal event, I promise to go shopping with you.”

She cocks her head, studying me. “Be careful what you say with the company you keep these days.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Jon Howard is the kind of man who would have to do many of these things. I bet he’s coming to the benefit.”

I roll my eyes. “Of course he is. It’s his grandmother’s charity. I think he’s helping her host or something.”

“Okay. Well, let’s check out and then grab something to eat. Savannah needs food.”

I nod, then look at the tag for the first time. When I see the price, I wince. I have the money, but I hate spending it on things like this, and it kind of irritates me. The amount of PJ bottoms and fuzzy socks I could buy for this is insane. I mean, those I can wear all the time. This will probably be a one-time thing, and I hate wasting money. If this was any other person, I wouldn’t go. Hell, even if one of my family was handling it, I would donate money and just not attend. Or if I did, I wouldn’t worry about a new dress.

Estella is different. First, she’s scarier than Savannah. Second, I owe her. She could have easily kicked me out of the house, but she didn’t. I will dress up and go to pay her back and show her respect.

I change back into my clothes, then go out to the floor. The sales lady takes my dress, puts a bag over it, and hands it back to me. Liv’s dress is already bagged. The woman shakes her head when I pull out my card to pay.

“Your friend already paid for it.”

I look at Savannah. “I can pay for it.”

She shakes her head. “I said I would pay. Also, you got me out of the house. I can’t believe we aren’t filming for the next few months.”

Their trip to Puerto Rico was the end of the second season of her show. Fritz—and the Hawthorne family, who owns the network—insisted that she take off for her last trimester and the first three months after the baby is born. “I just know that Fritz is going to get worse.”
