I glance at Josh and smile. “Yeah, the Russo sisters are over in the parlor.”

“Really?”

I nod.

“Excuse me.”

It seems that the rumors about Josh and his crush are accurate. There is always a little truth in every rumor. I almost laugh out loud as Josh ignores everyone else as he beelines to the parlor.

Once we’re alone, Jon says nothing. He just keeps staring at me, and it’s freaking me out.

“What?”

“You know he’s got a crush on Bree Russo, right?”

I snort. “Yeah. Everyone knows that.”

“So, he wouldn’t be interested in dating you.”

“More importantly, I’m not interested in dating him.”

He searches my gaze with his and seems to relax.

“Jon,” Estella says from behind him.

He turns. “What?”

I almost laugh at his tone. He sounds like he just got caught stealing cookies. And, of course, that makes me think of many other things that could represent cookies.

“Here’s your phone. Your friend is kind of a mess.”

“Tell me something I don’t know.”

He takes his phone back.

Estella smiles at me. “Are you enjoying yourself, Avery?”

“Always.”

Estella gives me a slight smile. “I have to mingle. You two should dance.”

And with that pronouncement, she heads off to terrorize other people.

“I love your grandma. If I ever grow up, I want to be like her.”

Jon turns to face me again, and he shakes his head. “Because she ordered us to dance?”

“No. It’s because she lives life on her own terms.”

He cocks his head as he studies me. “Is that what you’re doing?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that you don’t seem to follow the rules.”

“What rules? Where in life did this set of rules get written down?”

He shakes his head as he reaches for my now empty glass, taking it from me and placing it on the platter of one of the servers. He holds my hand as he tugs me to the dance floor.
