“What are you doing?”

“My grandmother told us to dance. And you know that when Estella Howard tells you to do something, you do it.”

I roll my eyes and allow him to lead me to the dance floor. This is a terrible idea. The songs are not fast, mainly because Estella hired an orchestra to play music.

But, instead of stopping to dance, Jon pulls me through the crowd approaching the band director. He talks to the man, who nods, then steps away and pulls me into his arms. The band stops playing the song everyone was dancing to. Like right in the middle of it, it just stops. Everyone is looking around, confused. The first cords from the piano start with the first dance version of Taylor Swift’sLover. What is this man trying to do to me? Does he know that I love Taylor Swift? I try my best not to respond. His mouth curves as if he knows I’m dealing with my attraction.

“What are you doing?”

“I thought that was apparent.”

“Jon.”

“Avery, it’s just a dance.” Then he turns us, pulling me against him tighter. God, his body is so warm and hard. Holy guacamole, he smells like a dream. A really hot dream where we’re both naked.

“No reason to freak out.”

He bends down to whisper those words into my ear. His breath feathers over my skin, sending a wave of need through me. He’s so warm, and he smells so good. I glance up at him through my lashes and see the heat in his eyes. I don’t think a man has ever looked at me like that. And if I can see it…

I glance around. Yup, everyone is watching us. Not openly, although a few are gawking. There will definitely be a lot of gossiping on the JSE about this. That really shouldn’t bother me, but it does.

Looking back at him, I shake my head at him. “They’re staring.”

“Who cares?”

“You, normally.”

He frowns. “What do you mean?”

“I know you hate to be the center of attention.”

“That’s…weird.”

“I think so too. Why wouldn’t you want to be the center of attention?”

There is a beat of silence, then a chuckle sneaks out of Jon. It sounds like rust, like he’s not used to it. Then, as if he can’t help it, a full-bodied laugh explodes out of him.

“You know, you drive me up the wall, right?”

I smile. “You and just about everyone else.”

He shakes his head. “Naw. The LOLs love you. They are always talking about you. And then there are your nieces and nephews. They think you are the cool aunt.”

“You’ve only just met Sammy and Callie.”

“True, but I bet they all love you. You’re like a golden retriever.”

“Did you just compare me to a dog?”

He smiles and executes a turn to avoid another couple. I glance over and realize it’s the mayor and his wife.

“Yes. But you are happy chaos. That’s a golden retriever.”

I frown. That doesn’t sound very nice. Like here I’m mooning over his tux and what he can do with his hands, and he thinks I’m the female Houdini.

“There is that other part of you.”

A timber to his voice has me looking up at him through my lashes again. “Yeah?”
