She kisses our grandmother on the cheek and then leaves us alone. They haven’t always been that close, but that stalking incident helped them resolve their issues.

“I saw you dancing with Avery.”

I nodded. No use in denying what everyone had seen.

“I want you to be careful with Avery.”

“What’s that mean?”

“Please don’t use your mutual attraction to get her out of the house.”

“What are you getting at?” A sick feeling swirls in my stomach.

She sighs. “You are a very handsome man. All the Howard men are.”

“And?”

“Please don’t try to seduce her to chase her away. Avery has been through a rough time.”

“As everyone keeps reminding me,” I bite out. I wish people would worry about me as much as they worry about Avery. I didn’t just lose a loved one, but I never have gotten the same worry from my family. No, they seem to think that I’m an asshole.

“Jon, I want your promise that you won’t do anything like that.”

I haven’t always gotten along with my grandmother, but I at least hoped she knew I was a decent man.

“Do you actually think that I would do something like that?”

She shakes her head. “Not when you’re in the right frame of mind. You’re acting weird, though.”

I roll my eyes. “I promise not to seduce Avery to get rid of her. There, happy?”

She steps closer and cups my face. “I will be happy when you are finally happy, Jon.”

She’s never said anything like that to me before. “Grandmother?”

She shakes her head and turns to leave.

“Is everything okay? I mean, you’re not dying, are you?”

She looks back over her shoulder at me. Her mouth curves. “We’re all dying, Jon, but I don’t plan on leaving this earth before I get great grandbabies.”

Then she leaves me to my thoughts. None of which are good. I didn’t think I would ever want to have something to do with Avery. Other than signing a sworn affidavit after she was arrested for stealing my house.

I shake my head. Now, I can’t think of being in that house without her. Hell, yesterday had been sad and lonely without her fussing around the house. I’m not sure what that means, but I might have lost my damned mind.

My phone buzzes in my pocket.

Nancy:You might want to get out here before Ford romances your roommate away from you.

Me:There is no romancing her away from me. We are not interested in each other.

There, I put it in a text to prove I’m serious about that statement.

Nancy:If you’re telling the truth, then this won’t bug you.

Me:Not in the least.
