“Oh, I surprised you.” She smiles. “That’s hard to do. And I think there’s another person who surprises you regularly.”

“We would never work.”

“Is that how you start every relationship? You know they will never last, so you’re cool with it.”

I open my mouth.

“Oh, Jon, you date all those models because you know you would never want forever with them. That’s why you’re freaking out about Avery.”

I rear back. “I am not freaking out about Avery.”

She giggles as she sips her drink. “You are, and I’m here for it. It’s about time you have someone who upends your world. It’s good for you. You’ve been alone for too long.”

“Why is it that when women get their happily ever after, they want everyone else to have one too?”

“Because I love you, and I want you to be happy. Also, you’ve been lonely.”

“I have not.”

She sighs and shakes her head. “We both were. I found Syd, but you never really found that as a kid. I know you’re friends with Trevor, but I also know that you keep him at arm’s length.”

“If you have to count on people, they will let you down.”

Her smile fades. “Jonathon Jebediah Howard.”

“That is not even close to my middle name.”

“So, your mother let you down?”

“No.”

“Maybe I should text her right now and let her know.”

Fear flashes through me. “Don’t you dare.”

“Jon, dude, please don’t tell me that your father fucked you up that much. Thank God you are a good man, more like your mother.”

“You think I should just jump into a relationship with Avery? That’s absurd.”

“Why, because you want to kiss her?”

“I do not.” Lie.

“Do too.”

“Do not.” Still lying.

“Well, this is where the only two grandchildren I invited to the fundraiser are hiding,” our grandmother says.

I whip my head around and frown. She has always been a ninja, even with that damned cane tapping on the floor. She could probably teach the SEALs about how to sneak up on people.

“We aren’t hiding. I’m giving your second favorite grandchild a talking to.”

I scoff. “Second favorite.”

“You both need to be out on the floor. Especially you, Nancy. Travis is looking at bidding on something insanely inappropriate.”

She sighs. “Oh, well, you’re on your own, cuz.”
