“Stop that.”

She looks up at me through her lashes. The hall light isn’t on, so the only light on is the kitchen, but it leaves it dark enough to make it feel secluded.

“Stop what?”

“Stop acting like I’m lying to you.”

“Jon, you don’t like me. You have accused me of trying to steal your house, insinuated that I was spending time with your grandmother because she’s rich, and generally been a butthead to me. I’m supposed to think that you are attracted enough to be jealous of another man? I’m goofy, but I’m not stupid.”

I lean down. “I don’t understand it either. But seeing you with other men…it does something to me.”

She’s giving me a dubious look.

“It makes me want to beat the shit out of them.”

Her eyes widen.

“Yeah, surprised me too.”

“Still. It’s not like you’re interested in me.”

This woman doesn’t make anything easy. Nothing.

“You’ve been a pain in my ass since I arrived here and found you squatting in my house.”

“Not your house.”

“And there you go. You have to argue with me all the time.”

“I do not.”

I don’t point out that she just contradicted me, and that’s arguing. I can’t think. Being this close to her while we’re alone in the house has my body reacting. My head is spinning, my blood is heating, and my cock twitching. I draw a deep breath, trying to calm myself, but that’s a mistake. The scent of her sugary sweetness. Then, I do the only thing I can think of. I lower my head and slam my mouth against hers.

She doesn’t react for a second, and regret hits me. She doesn’t feel the same way. But just a second before I pull completely back, she makes a little sound and then starts kissing me back. Her hands slide up my chest to behind my neck as she opens her mouth. Slanting my head, I deepen the kiss, invading her mouth. God, her taste explodes inside me, and I don’t think I’ve ever tasted anything as decadent as Avery O’Bryan.

I settle a hand on her waist, my fingers flexing against the soft fabric of her dress. I want more. I want her legs wrapped around me as I thrust inside of her. I want it all, her flesh against mine, her moans echoing off the ceiling in my room.

Then, in the next second, she pulls away from me.

“This isn’t a good idea.”

“What? I think it’s an excellent idea.”

Her breaths are coming out fast and furious. Even in the dim light, I can see she’s flushed.

“Uh, yeah, we’re good at kissing, but we live together. Not a good idea.”

I open my mouth, but she slips around me and heads up the stairs.

“Let’s sleep on it.”

“You expect me to sleep after you kissed the hell out of me?”

She turns around and frowns. “You kissed me.”

“You were a participant.”

“I…never mind. You stay there. I’m going upstairs, and we can discuss this in the morning.”
