Why is she being so reasonable? Avery O’Bryan is a lot of things, but reasonable is not one of them. Before I can convince her to stay, she’s hurrying up the stairs as if the flames of hell are chasing her.

My entire body is humming, need coursing through every inch, and of course, my cock is harder than a nail.

“Meow.”

I look down at Meredith.

“Exactly.”

ChapterTwenty-Three

Avery

The sun slants over my windshield as I park in front of Liv’s house the following day. I left my sunglasses at home, but I couldn’t go back there and get them. I snuck out of the house in the early morning hours and haven’t screwed up the courage to return.

I tried to go to bed after that kiss. Not surprisingly, I couldn’t sleep. My insomnia is legendary, but there was a reason behind it last night. I also couldn’t promise that I wouldn’t sneak into Jon’s bedroom and seduce him. Just thinking about that kiss right now has my entire body lighting up and my fingers itching. I need to touch him, to feel his skin beneath my fingertips.

Closing my eyes, I pull in a deep breath. My nerves have been strung tight since he showed up at the house. Last night about broke the last little nerve I’ve been holding onto.

There’s a knock on my car window, making me jump. I look up and find Mason standing beside my car. He’s smiling at me. Sighing, I grab my purse and phone and slip out of my car.

“Kind of early for you, Avery.” He takes a sip of coffee as he studies me.

“Did I catch you sneaking back home?”

I smile when his cheeks turn ruddy. God, he’s a cutie and perfect for my sister.

“No.”

“So, you got up early and are on your way back?”

He chuckles. “Come on. I promised Sammy I would take him to breakfast today.”

“Look at you.”

We walk up the path to my sister’s house. I know there are probably posts on the JSE about my night, before and after the kiss. Not that anyone knows about the kiss. Now I show up at my sister’s house at what I consider the crack of dawn. Other people call it just before eight.

I squint against the sun wishing I’d brought my glasses. I really should have gone back for them. And Meredith.

The moment we step inside Liv’s house, there’s chaos. Well, as much chaos as my sister allows. Little feet scurry, and there’s Houdini, who comes running down the hallway, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. You would think he would slow down, but he doesn’t. Instead, he speeds up and then hurls himself at Mason.

“Hey, buddy, careful there,” Mason says between kisses.

While Mason is occupied with Houdini, I rush into the kitchen to find my sister pouring herself a cup of coffee. Her eyes widen when she sees me.

“What are you doing here so early?”

I raise my hands and then let them drop to my sides. “Why does everyone keep saying that?”

“Who else has said that to you?”

“Your boy toy.”

That gets me a frown, but I ignore it.

“I need to talk.”

“Hey, Avery!” Sammy is so loud in the mornings. It’s a wonder he doesn’t wake everyone up on the street.
