He was out of the chair in a flash, anger tightening his features. “Don’tevercompare me to any man you’ve had in your bed before. I’m not like any of them.”

The intensity in his voice, in his eyes, held her momentarily speechless. She gathered the sheets closer, pulling them to her neck. She’d never actually seen him this irritated before. Men hated comparison, but she hadn’t made any.

She shook her head. “That wasn’t what I was planning on saying.” His frown turned meaner, and she shrugged. “Besides, what was I to think, Max? We didn’t resolve anything last night. We just had sex.”

He stared at her, his face now expressionless. His eyes told nothing of his feelings. After a moment or two of his study of her, he relaxed his stance. The smile took her by surprise.

“Greatsex,” he corrected, the amusement evident in his voice.

At first, she felt a quick, sharp jab of pain. Aggravation crept down her spine. Damn him for cracking jokes when her heart was breaking.

“And we did resolve one thing. You love me.” A satisfied, masculine smile spread across his lips. Irritation was quickly turning into anger. Again, she wondered what kind of an idiot she was for loving him.

She opened her mouth to argue with him, to say that it didn’t matter, but she couldn’t handle it. She didn’t have the energy to fight him, or her feelings. Her shoulders slumped and she sighed.

“Sure, throw that in my face.”

His smile widened and she couldn’t take it anymore. She had to get out of there or she would disgrace herself by crying and begging for him to stay. That or she might smack him upside the head.

She struggled to get out of bed, but he sat beside her and grabbed her arms. “Anna, I wasn’t throwing it in your face. I think it’s essential since we’re going to get married next month.”

She kept struggling for a second or two after that announcement. She stopped fighting him when what he said finally registered.

“What the hell are you talking about, Max?”

“Our wedding. Do you want something traditional, or do you want to run off to Vegas? We could do it a lot sooner if we do the latter.”

The irritation was back, inching up her spine, making her itch from the inside out. “Am I missing something here, Max? I haven’t heard a proposal.”

“You’re not getting one.”

She twisted her arms free and jumped out of the bed. “What the hell do you mean? I don’t deserve a proposal? You’re just telling me we’re getting married?”

He looked up at her, his lips set in a frown. “You told me you love me. You can’t take it back.”

“We already established that fact.” She grabbed her robe and shrugged into it. After tying the belt, she crossed her arms beneath her breasts.

“Well, since I love you, we get married. I’m not giving you a chance to think about it and come up with some harebrained reason not to get married.”

Her heart smacked against her chest and then flip-flopped a couple times. She looked down at him and saw the raw truth in his eyes. The vulnerability.

Anna reached out to run her fingers through his hair, and wasn’t surprised to see her hand shake. Oh, Lord, how could she have missed it?

“You love me?” She ignored the way her voice wavered, and the tears gathering in her eyes.

“Of course I do.” He frowned at her, his voice filled with pure male disgust—as if she should have figured it out by herself. “What the hell do you think this all means?”

She shook her head. “Not really sure. You just never said…”

“If I said anything, you would have went running in the other direction.”

She laughed, albeit a watery one. “You think you know me so well?”

“I had a plan, and it was a good one.”

“And I messed up your plan?” This time she didn’t laugh because he looked so serious. “Just what was this plan?”

“I was going to wear you down. It was a sound plan, until Cynthia showed up. Then you go off on a wild hair without even confronting me.”
