“That was your grand plan? You were going to wait around?”

He frowned at her. “It would have worked.”

She laughed as she leaned down and gave him a quick buss on his mouth. Enough for a taste, enough to tempt. When she pulled back, he reached for the sash of her robe. He tugged at it until it came free. She discarded it behind her as Max was reaching for her.

He pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her waist. “No more calling the shots, Anna.” He rested his head against her breasts, and his hands slid to cup her ass. When he spoke next, his breath warmed her skin. “I can’t go back to being just friends. I need you in my life. Lord knows you need someone to keep you on the straight and narrow.”

She chuckled, leaning back to look at his face. Warmth filled her, heating her blood, softening her heart. She couldn’t think of living without him beside her. Not a day would go by without him there, and she knew that without a doubt now.

Oh, God, she loved him. She’d always known she had, but it wasn’t until this moment that she realized how much. Just how complete he made her.

“Anna?”

She wiped away the wetness on her cheeks and smiled. “Okay, you got it.”

Relief softened his features, and he smiled that crooked smile that always made her knees weak.

“Well, just so you know, you aren’t always going to be in charge.” She pushed against his shoulder, and he reclined on the bed. Climbing on top of him, she leaned down to kiss him. She could feel his heart beating hard in his chest, his cock hardening against her sex. Anna smiled.

“Now, let’s have a discussion about who should be in charge at this very moment.”

He laughed, then moaned as Anna kissed her way down his chest, nipping at the skin above his bellybutton. It was about time Max learned a thing or two about the pleasures of allowing a woman to take the lead—and she was just the woman to teach him.

“I don’t knowwhy we have to wait,” Max said. His irritated tone filtered over the phone. His idea that they would get married in a month had been insane. Anna had no idea why he would think that would happen.

“Your mother and mine had a meltdown when I told them.”

That was a bit of a fib. Both of their mothers had been so happy that Max and Anna had finally come to their senses that they would have rented a jet to take them to Vegas. When Anna told them she wanted a traditional wedding, they had become a united front to help her fight Max.

“Yeah. Still.”

She chuckled. “Listen, Cynthia should be here any minute.”

“Again, I don’t know why you think getting her blessing or whatever is so important.”

That was not what she was doing. Anna wanted to clear the air. While she didn’t think they would ever be friends, she had been where Cynthia was now. People treated her as if she was diseased just because of the broken engagement. It was the twenty-first century, not Victorian England where women had dowries. Although, there was a good chance rich people did have those kinds of marriages today.

“Was Cynthia’s father paying you to marry her?”

“What the fuck?”

“Sorry, my mind was wandering.”

“The answer is no.”

“Anyway, she should be here any minute.”

“Fine. Dinner with the folks at my place tonight.”

Max’s parents had arrived home yesterday, and her parents had returned from Pensacola last week. It was the first time they were all getting together to discuss the wedding in person. Unbeknownst to Max, she’d had long discussions via text with her mom and Charise.

“Of course. Love you.”

After hanging up the phone, she hurried to start boiling water. She had cleaned her house, worried about making an impression. Yes, it was insane. Cynthia had tried to steal her man, but she was raised by a southern mama.

The doorbell rang as she flipped on the switch to the electric kettle.
