“Come on, Ella, let’s go to bed,” he said, helping her stand.

He walked her over to the bedroom door and ushered her inside. When he returned to the living room, his phone was in his hand and he was typing furiously into it.

“I ordered you a ride. I’ll walk you downstairs and make sure you get in the right one this time,” he said, reminding me of theone timeI had accidentally gotten in the wrong car.

It was only for like a block or two. It was fine.

When I wokethe next morning, my head was pounding and the room was spinning. I hadn’t had a hangover like that in a long time. I dragged myself out of bed and got into the shower, where I stood perfectly still for far too long. I made my way into the kitchen and started some coffee, knowing that it would be a multi-cup day.

I picked up my phone while I waited and started to send a message to Ella to see if she was in as bad a condition as I was. When I opened the previous message from her, I realized it was Dylan’s number. That I had asked her for. After telling her how hot I thought he was. The memories of the previous night started pouring in, but there was one that I couldn’t place.

Had I told Ella that Dylan and I slept together? How much did she really know?

I poured my coffee and immediately got back into bed. This was bad. So, very bad.

DYLAN

Several weeks after asking Ella for Grace’s number, and debating back and forth over calling her or not, I finally got up the courage to do it. It’s not that I was scared of calling her, or of being rejected by her, because really, who could reject me?

But I was more scared about what might happen if Ella found out that we were sneaking around behind her back.

I paced my apartment as the phone rang, and I felt like I was fifteen again, calling a girl to ask her on a date.

“Dylan?” Grace’s voice came through the phone.

“Uh, yeah, hi. How did you know it was me?”

“Oh, um, I just—uh,”

“You haven’t been waiting for my call, have you?”

“What? No, of course not.”

“Then how did you know it was me?”

“Um, well, Ella gave me your number, so.”

“She did? Why would she do that?”

“So, what’s up Dylan? Is there a purpose to this phone call?”

She was always straight to the point, wasn’t she?

“Actually, I was hoping you’d go out with me this weekend.”

Silence. A long, long silence.

“Uh, hello?”

“I’m still here.”

“Did you hear what I asked?”

“Yeah, I heard you.”

“So?”
