I put down the phone and looked up at Grace, whose expression hadn’t changed. She was staring at me with glazed eyes, clearly terrified about how she was going to explain this to Ella.
“There’s also 9 missed calls from her and 4 from Jonas. I am such an idiot.”
“What are you talking about? You’re not an idiot.”
“I don’t know what to do,” she said quietly.
I sat down on the bed next to her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
“We’ll figure it out, okay?”
“No. There can’t be a ‘we’. This was a mistake. I need to go home.”
She stood from the bed and pulled on her dress from the night before. I didn’t know what to say, but I couldn’t let her leave like this.
“Grace, wait.”
“I am a terrible friend, and a terrible human being.”
“That’s not true.”
“Dylan. We cannot do this again. We cannot see each other or be alone with each other. It’s not fair to Ella, and we both care about her too much to do this to her.”
I tried to swallow the lump in my throat. She was absolutely right, but I didn’t want her to be.
“I’ll see you at the wedding,” she said quietly, “please bring a date.”
“Grace, please. Let’s just talk about this.”
I had let her go once before, and I wasn’t about to make the same mistake again.
“I’m going to Los Angeles for two weeks for some shows. Come with me.”
“Are you insane?”
“We can have some time alone and some space from Ella to figure out what to do.”
“We already know what we need to do.”
“Please come with me.”
“You know I can’t do that.”
“Grace,” I said again, as a last-ditch effort to keep her from leaving.
“Even if I did think it was a good idea, which I don’t, what would I tell Ella?”
“Why do you have to tell her anything?”
“Because we talk every single day. I see her at least twice a week. She would notice if I was on the opposite side of the country.”
“Tell her you’re sick.”
“She’d want to come over.”
“Tell her you’ve taken a lover,” I said with a wink, trying to ease the tension in the room.
“She’d want to meet him.”
