“Can you help me?”

“Of course, but how?”

“I just don’t have time to worry about him this weekend.”

“So you want me to worry about him for you?”

“I need you to investigate. I think he might be seeing someone, but he’s keeping it a secret from me, and I want to know who it is and why he hasn’t told me.”

I swallowed loudly and tried to figure out how to respond.

“He seems to like you. Can you just talk to him? See if he’ll tell you anything?”

“I mean, I guess I can try. But don’t you think he wouldn’t tell me anything because he knows I’ll just tell you?”

“Maybe,” Ella said quietly.

She looked out over the ocean and chewed on the inside of her cheek.

“I’ll see what I can do.”

“Thank you so much. You’re the best friend I could ever ask for.”

Ella hugged me again, but this time she lingered a bit longer than normal.

“But please don’t let him talk you into sleeping with him.”

I patted Ella’s back and tried to reassure her that would never happen, but the guilt was eating me from the inside out.

“You better get back in there,” I encouraged as Ella finally let me go.

“You’re right. Have fun tonight, okay?”

I smiled as she scurried back into the restaurant, but I wasn’t in any hurry to follow her inside. I sat down on the sand and watched as the sun started to sink further and further below the horizon.

A moment later, I heard footsteps approaching me from behind. I looked over my shoulder to see Dylan carrying two glasses of wine. He sat down next to me and handed one glass to me, which I promptly drank like I had just walked through a desert.

“Wow,” Dylan said as he watched, “what did Ella want to talk to you about?”

“It’s kind of silly, and I don’t really know what to do about it.”

“What is it?”

“She wants me to investigate.”

“Investigate what?”

“You.”

Dylan nearly choked on his wine as I said it. He managed to swallow and he glanced up at me. I couldn’t tell if he was about to laugh or cry. Maybe both.

“Um… what?”

“She thinks you’re seeing someone. She’s worried about you because you’re not acting as dick-ish as normal.”

“Interesting,” he said as he leaned back onto his elbows, “so what are you going to tell her?”

“I have no idea. I can’t tell her the truth. At least, not this weekend.”
