“Can I take you back to my room tonight? Show you a good time?”

I bit my lip and tried to keep from smiling as we walked back into the hotel and wrapped the newlyweds up in a hug.

DYLAN

At the reception that evening, I tried to keep my distance from Grace, but it felt like an impossible task. All I could think about was getting that gold dress onto the floor. I wanted to feel her skin pressed against mine. I wanted my hands all over her body, and her hands all over me. I wanted to taste her sweet lips and feel her breath on my neck.

“Dylan Woods?”

The sound of my name snapped me out of my increasingly dirty daydream. I glanced up to see an older woman standing next to me.

“May I take this seat?” she asked, indicating the open chair next to me.

I nodded, completely unaware of who this woman was. But I had a feeling she was going to tell me.

“It’s so nice to see you,” she said with a grin.

There was a smudge of red lipstick across her teeth, and I couldn’t help but stare at it. It drew all of my attention.

“Yeah, nice to see you, too,” I said, hoping she wouldn’t sense my unease.

“You don’t know who I am, do you?”

“I—uh—well.”

“I was your mother’s college roommate.”

“Oh really? I didn’t know my mom kept in touch with anyone from college.”

“Well, we lost touch many years ago. And then when she—well—it had been a long time since we had spoken. I’m very sorry for your loss, by the way.”

“Thank you.”

“I ran into your sister a few months ago, and she was generous enough to invite me to this lovely wedding. She’s a beautiful woman. Looks just like your mother.”

“Yeah,” I said with a sad smile, “she does.”

“Well, I just had to come over and introduce myself. My name is Debbie, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you, Debbie. Thank you for coming.”

She smiled and stood from the table and began making her way through the crowd. I looked at my watch and realized it was just about time to get this show on the road. I walked into the hotel to make sure Jonas and Ella were ready, and they looked just as in love as ever.

Their eyes were locked on one another, and their fingers were intertwined. It made me so happy to see my sister in such a blissful state. But I have to admit it also made me ache a bit. Despite what people may have thought about me, I longed for a real relationship. I wanted a real connection with someone I could spend my life with.

Now that I had found someone with whom I connected and cherished, I wondered if I was ever going to be able to be with her publicly.

“Hey, love birds.”

Ella looked over at me, but Jonas kept his eyes locked on her.

“You ready for your grand entrance?”

“Ready when you are.”

I cocked my head towards the reception just outside the doors and they stood from their lounge and followed me.
