“Of course I did.”

“Where is my phone?”

I crossed the room and grabbed her phone off the vanity. She had it pressed to her ear within a matter of seconds, and she started leaving a series of rather angry voicemails with each unanswered call.

The longer she tried to call, the more her eyes began to fill with tears. I knew he wouldn’t just leave. But where the hell was he?

“Ella, I don’t think calling him anymore is going to solve anything. Just take some deep breaths.”

She nodded and handed me her phone as she closed her eyes and tried to breathe. Just then, her phone started buzzing, and Dylan’s name popped up on the screen.

“Hey, asshole! Do you have any idea what time it is? Are youtryingto ruin the best day of my life? You better have averygood excuse for why you’re so late,” Ella started berating him the moment she answered the call.

There was a brief pause before she started yelling again.

“You fell asleep? On my wedding day? How could you do this to me?”

“Ella,” I said, trying to remain calm, “it’s okay. Is he coming?”

I wasn’t sure who was more pissed at Dylan, but I wasn’t going to let her know how angry I was at him. I wrestled the phone out of her hand and pressed it to my ear.

“Dylan?”

“I’m sorry, Grace. I didn’t mean to ruin anything.”

“I know. It’s fine. Just—”

“No! It is NOT fine!” Ella hollered, her voice quavering.

“Just get down here, okay?”

“I’m on my way,” he said solemnly.

A short while later, everyone was lined up to walk down the aisle. Ella was finally calm, and she looked like she walked right out of a bridal magazine. Her bouquet was immaculate, and her smile was radiant. Despite all of the chaos of this day, we finally made it. It was time to get her married.

On my cue, I made my way down the sandy aisle with a smile on my face. Jonas stood under the altar, clearly anxious, but in a good way. He bounced back and forth on his feet, anticipating the sight of his beautiful bride.

When I arrived at my spot, the crowd stood to watch Ella come down the aisle, escorted by Dylan. She looked unbelievable, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. His eyes sparkled with wetness as they smiled at the guests in attendance. With every step he took closer to me, I felt my heart beat faster and faster.

I found myself fantasizing about the day I would walk down the aisle towards him, but I immediately tried to push that out of my head. I was certain he wasn’t in that place, and we had other obstacles to deal with before that could even be a possibility.

When Dylan and Ella reached the top of the aisle, he gave her a kiss on the cheek and handed her off to Jonas, who was wiping tears with a small white handkerchief. I couldn’t help but shed a few tears myself as I watched my best friend in the world unite with her true love.

Dylan joined the rest of the groomsmen, and he was perfectly placed so that I could stare right at him without anyone noticing. He looked over at me and smiled, then gave me a subtle wink that made me feel like I was going to lose my balance.

I had to promise myself not to look at him for the rest of the ceremony, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to control myself. But, of course, I couldn’t keep my promise, and I found myself watching him the entire time. He watched me back, and it felt like we were the only two in the room, lost in each other’s eyes.

“You may kiss the bride!” the pastor exclaimed as the crowd burst into cheers and applause.

I was brought back to reality and clapped along with everyone else as Jonas grabbed Ella and dipped her low for a passionate and loving kiss.

They made their way down the aisle together, and I realized I was going to be walking out with Dylan. We linked our arms and slowly followed behind the bride and groom.

“You’re so fucking sexy,” Dylan whispered into my ear.

Shivers shot down my spine, but I tried to keep my composure.

“You can’t say that in public,” I whispered with a smile.
