“You’re probably right.”

We laughed and suddenly, everything felt right in the world again. That is, until I had my realization.

“Hang on,” I said, “you still haven’t told me how you feel about all of this.”

“Right…well, at first I was pissed. Dylan knows how I feel about him dating my friends, and I was furious that you kept it from me.”

“That’s fair.”

“But then I realized that you’re the smartest person I know. If you’re dating him, he obviously hasn’t tricked you into it. And I knew without a doubt that you weren’t in it for his money or anything.”

“So…?”

“So, after I had some time to calm down and really think about it, I decided not to be mad. I actually think it’s kind of great.”

“You do?”

“Yeah, I mean, two of my favorite people in the world together and in love? What could be better than that?”

I felt my eyes well with tears. I reached across the table and grabbed Ella’s hand. I had no idea what to expect when I walked into this restaurant today, but it certainly wasn’t this. Ella giving her full support was more than I had ever hoped for, and I wasn’t sure I would be able to keep the tears in much longer.

She looked at me with love in her eyes, and I couldn’t help but reciprocate. I wasn’t sure how I had managed to land such an incredible and understanding friend, but I vowed to neverevertake her for granted.

The rest of my lunch break passed way too quickly as Ella told me about the honeymoon and all of the amazing adventures they went on. I listened as she told me stories about people she met and sights they saw, and it warmed my heart knowing how happy my best friend was.

After a heartfelt goodbye, I started to walk back to my office, but I knew I couldn’t wait until tonight to talk to Dylan. I pulled my phone out of my bag and started a call, waiting for him to answer with anxious anticipation.

When his face appeared on my screen, I smiled, and felt like the happiest person alive.

“You’re kidding me,” I said, utter disbelief filling my voice, “that didn’t happen. Are you lying to me?”

“Why would I lie to you about that?” Grace asked, her face pulling into a smile as I watched her on my phone screen.

“I don’t know. I just—it’s hard to believe.”

“I know. I couldn’t believe it either. I basically broke down in tears right in the middle of the restaurant.”

“I just can’t believe she would be so fine with it. You didn’t even have to convince her or anything?”

“I’m telling you, she’s cool with it. In fact, she’s excited about it.”

“Now that I definitely don’t believe.”

“Well, believe it! We can be a real couple now. No more hiding or sneaking around. No more lies. Just us.”

“I love you, Grace.”

“I love you, too,” she said with a smile.

No matter how many times I heard her say it, I didn’t think I would ever get tired of it. We ended the call and I set my phone down, relief washing over me like a wave from the ocean.

While I was on tour,I didn’t speak to Ella at all. It’s not that I was avoiding her or trying not to talk to her, I simply wanted to talk about things with her in person.

The months I was away dragged on, and I wanted nothing more than to be home with Grace. Finally, I got to return to New York, but I knew I needed to see Ella as soon as possible.
