I met up with her at Water’s Edge the night I returned to the city. I figured there was no better place than our special spot, and I was hoping that Ella would arrive in a good mood. Much to my surprise, she showed up with a smile on her face, and a hug ready to greet me.

“I missed you so much!” she said as she wrapped her arms around me.

“You—you did?”

“Of course! I feel like its been months since I have talked to you.”

“Well… it has been, and I’m sorry about that.”

“That’s okay. Just tell me what’s been going on with you. How was your tour?”

“It was amazing, but honestly, I couldn’t wait to get back here.”

“To see me, right?” she asked with a cheeky grin.

“Of course! But also to see Grace…”

Ella’s lips pressed into a thin line, and I was suddenly worried that she actuallywasn’tokay with all of this, and I was about to get the brunt of her anger.

“I know you guys talked…and I’m really sorry that you had to find out about us that way. We should have told you sooner.”

“You know what, Dylan? I was really pissed at you about it for a while.”

“That’s fair.”

“But after seeing you at the wedding, and putting the two together, I couldn’t be too upset.”

“What do you mean?”

She took a deep breath and looked away from me. When she looked back, her eyes were full of tears. I reached across the table to hold her hand, and she squeezed it tight.

“I knew there was something different about you at the wedding. You seemed—I don’t know—just different.”

I nodded my head, unsure about where this was all going, but I waited for her to continue.

“And then when I found out about you and Grace, and I realizedthatis why you seemed different, I couldn’t be mad at you.”

“Why not?”

“I have never seen you so happy. Even without knowing anything that was going on between you two, it was obvious you were in a good place, and I hadn’t seen you like that in a long time.”

I smiled at her and debated if I should say something or let her keep talking.

“I am happy,” I finally said after a long pause.

“I can see that. I just can’t believe that it’s Grace who is making you so happy. I mean, I can believe it, because she’s absolutely wonderful.”

“Yes, she is.”

“But I can’t believe that you’re with her. That the two of you are together. I never would have thought it could work.”

“Ella, she’s amazing. She’s brilliant and beautiful and—”

“I know all of that, Dylan. She’s my best friend.”

“Right.”

“You don’t deserve her, you know that, right?”
