“So, you’re not irresistible to her, huh?”

“Apparently not. We only talk when I take my dogs to her for grooming or boarding. That’s where they are now.” He looked at his brother. “I swear, Nate, anytime I look at her, it’s like a kick in the gut, and she couldn’t care less.”

“Is she involved with someone?”

“Not that I know of. You know, I never see her with anyone.”

“Maybe men aren’t her thing,” Nate murmured.

“That would be my fucking luck,” Rhett said and chuckled when Nate laughed.

“Only one way to find out. Ask her out.”

“I should, but…” He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

“Come on, Rhett. Since when have you been shy around women? If she turns you down, then move on. What’s so hard about that?”

Rhett stared across the yard. Nate was right. How would he know if he didn’t take that step and ask Cin out?

“I’ll try when I get home.”

“Good.” Nate removed his feet from the rail, stood, and stretched. “Let’s go inside. I think I’ve gotten enough of this frigid air.”

Rhett got to his feet, and they headed for the door.

As he lay in bed later, he couldn’t stop thinking of Cin. Would she go out with him or shoot him down?

“Only one way to find out, Morrison,” he said as he drifted off.

A week later, Rhett drove to the kennels, parked, and ran inside. The chime announced his arrival, and a few minutes later, the woman who had waited on him when he dropped his dogs off came from the back. A smile lit up her face when she saw him.

“Hi. I see you made it back,” she said.

“Yes, ma’am. I’m eager to pick up my dogs.”

“All right. Let me get them for you.” She stepped to the computer, pressed the keys, then looked at him. “I’ll be right back. Don’t go anywhere.”

He smiled. “Yes, ma’am. I’ll be right here.”

“Good.” She left the office, and he sat on the bench to wait.

“Hi, Rhett.”

He glanced up to see Cin entering the lobby and quickly stood.

“Cin, how are you?”

“I’m fine. How was your holiday?” She folded her arms, and he did his best to keep her eyes off her chest.

“It was nice. Although, with two eighteen-month-old babies in the house, it was a little rough,” he said with a chuckle.

“Babies?”

“Yeah, Nate and Penelope have twins. A boy and a girl. I’ll tell you, they sure have a set of lungs on them.”

“Don’t you like kids?”

“Love them. I’m just not used to all that noise.”
