“Well, if you ever get married, you’ll have to get used to it.”

“I suppose that’s true. What about you—”

“Here you go.” The young woman entered the lobby with his dogs.

Rhett squatted down. “Hey, guys.”

He laughed when they jerked their leashes from the woman and ran to him, knocking him to the floor.

“I think they missed you,” Cin said.

“I think so too.” He hugged the dogs. “I missed you guys.”

Rhett did his best to push them away, but they weren’t letting him. Finally, Cin grabbed the leashes so he could get to his feet, then he took the leashes from her.

“Thanks. Let me take them to the truck, and I’ll be back to pay you.”

“All right.”

Rhett led the dogs to his truck and opened the door so they could hop inside. He closed the door and then reentered the lobby. He was disappointed to see that Cin wasn’t still there.

“How much do I owe you?” he asked.

The young woman smiled at him, gave him his total, and he handed her his debit card. When she handed it back to him, she didn’t let go when he tried to take it, and he raised his eyebrow at her.

“How about dinner one night?” she asked him.

“Uh…”

“Come on. What’s one dinner going to hurt?”

He thought about it, then shook his head.

“I’m sorry.”

“Okay, but if you change your mind, you know where to find me.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He touched the brim of his hat. “Have a good day.”

“It would be better if you would come for dinner.”

Rhett blew out a laugh. “I’m sure it would. Bye now.”

He turned and got the hell out of there. She was stunning, but he was more interested in getting Cin to go out with him right now.

Once outside, he climbed into his truck, fired it up, and drove home.

A few days later, as he mucked out a stall, he shook his head when he thought about asking Cin out and how he still hadn’t done it.

“Chickenshit,” he muttered.

“Calling yourself names now?”

Rhett spun around to see his cousin, Landry Yates, standing behind him.

“Hey, Landry. Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m doing.” It might be below freezing outside, but a man still got sweaty working in a barn. He removed his hat, pulled a handkerchief from his pocket, and wiped the sweat from his brow.

Landry grinned. “Woman troubles?”
