Rhett put his head back against the chair, closing his eyes. “I’d hate to feel it if you tried to hit me harder.”

Lucinda scooted to the edge of the couch. “I’m really sorry, Rhett.”

“Where were you?”

“Checking the dogs. No matter the weather or how I feel, they need to eat.”

“Okay. Damn, my head hurts. Youaredeadly.”

“I live alone. I have to be. Oh, I have to let Tigger inside.”

“This was payback, wasn’t it?”

“Those women are relentless when they want info. I had to explain. They thought it was hilarious.” Her eyes narrowed as she stared at him.

He shrugged. “Sorry, couldn’t resist.”

“So, we’re even, now?” Cin asked him. He nodded, and she gave him a big smile. “Are you hungry? I can make us some sandwiches.”

“As long as you don’t have any arsenic around.”

Cin laughed as she got up to get her crutch.

“I can help.” Rhett stood but swayed. Cin put her arm around his waist and helped him sit back down.

“I got this. I’ll be back in a few minutes. You can find something to watch.” She handed him the remote and picked up the crutches.

Two hours later, they were watching a scary movie, and he could see Cin loved it. As the movie progressed, the scarier it got. She checked on him several times to ensure his speech wasn’t still slurred. He could hold a conversation with her, but his head hurt. She jumped and covered her eyes.

“We can watch something else,” Rhett said.

She glared at him. “Ilovethis movie. Why would I want to change it?”

He rolled his eyes, making her laugh.

“I probably won’t sleep tonight at all. I try not to watch them when I’m alone, but since you’re here, I’ll be fine.”

“Nothing’s going to bother you. You kicked my ass pretty good.”

“Yes, but Isawyou. It’s scarier if you can’t see what you’re fighting.”

He nodded. “Good point.”

Cin stood. “I need to get some blankets and a pillow for you.” She headed toward the stairs.

“Tell me where they are, and I’ll get them.”

“No, I don’t want you walking up the stairs. That’s all I need for you to fall down them.”

“Well, it can’t be easier for you.”

“It’s fine. I know how to get up and down them. I’ll be right back.”

When she reentered the living room, she closed the doors and handed him his blankets and pillow.

“A bed would be nice.”
