“There’s plenty of spare bedrooms upstairs, but you don’t need to go up the stairs.”

“I just have a little headache. It’s been a few hours.”

“You can sleep in any of them if you’d like. I want to be here in case the electricity goes out. I’ll be warm. Please be careful.”

“You don’t mind if I sleep in a spare room?”

Cin shook her head. If the electricity went out, he could always come back downstairs. Since it was late and his head hurt, Rhett climbed the stairs, holding onto the railing, and then went to bed.

He awoke a few hours later, freezing. The electricity had gone out. He shivered as he got out of bed, trying to find his clothes. He reached for the flashlight he’d put on the nightstand earlier and found his clothes, then dressed. Damn, he thought Cin would have a generator. He gathered his blankets and pillow, opened the door quietly, walked along the landing, down the stairs, and then to the living room. He looked in and smiled when he saw Cin on the couch. All he could see was the top of her head. He opened one of the pocket doors and entered the room. The heat from the fire felt fantastic. He spread his blankets on the floor and took his shirt off.

Lucinda looked over at him. He didn’t know she was awake. She couldn’t take her eyes off his chest. His dark brown hair fell over his forehead, and she wanted desperately to run her fingers through it and brush it back. He was a gorgeous man with a terrific sense of humor. She loved hearing him laugh. Perfect straight, white teeth. And those dimples. He had it all. She knew Rhett wouldn’t be the man in her life. It wasn’t fair to him. She blew out a sigh.

“You’re awake?”

Lucinda pulled the cover down a little. “Yes. I was hiding under the blanket.”

He smiled. “What are you hiding from?”

Lucinda whispered. “The poltergeists.”

Rhett chuckled. “So, you were scared here by yourself? You could’ve come to my room. I’d protect you.”

Lucinda raised an eyebrow. “I’m sure you would.”

“Has the power been off long?”

“About an hour. I just took a pill, andpoof! Off it went.”

Rhett lay down, put his arms under his head, and stared at the ceiling.

“Why aren’t you married?”

“Why aren’t you?” She shot back.

“I haven’t found the right woman.”

Lucinda took a deep breath. “I have to say that’s why I’m not married.”

“You haven’t found the right woman?”

“Hilarious. I like men. Only God knows why.”

He chuckled. “That’s good to know, but something tells me that’s not all, but it’s none of my business.” He got to his feet.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she scolded.

“I need some aspirins.”

She got to her feet, put her hands on her hips and glared at him.

“Would it kill you to say, ‘Lucinda, could you get me some aspirin’?”

Rhett hung his head. “You’re not in any better shape than I am. I didn’t want to bother you.”

“Oh, please. You bother me all the time.” Lucinda spun around and went to the kitchen.
