“Are you sure?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’ll call you when I’m ready to head home.” He walked her around the other side of the car and opened the door for her. She got in the driver’s seat, smiled at him, then drove off. As he watched her leave, he looked toward the barn and saw three men standing there. He put his hands on his hips as he glared at them, making them scramble.

Rhett looked in the direction Cin had gone, and he wanted to follow her, but he had too much work to do. He hoped it would make the day go faster.

A while later, after they showered together, they sat at the kitchen room table, eating steaks and baked potatoes. The food was good, the company even better.

“What’re you thinking?” Rhett asked.

“About going to bed with you.” She smiled at him.

Rhett groaned. “I shouldn’t have asked.”

Cin laughed at him. “Can I see the cattle?”

Rhett’s eyebrows shot up. “They’re just cattle, Cin.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “I want to see my competition.”

Rhett laughed. “Darlin’, you have no competition.”

She put her elbow on the table, propped her cheek on her hand, and stared at him, then stood, picked up the plates, and walked to the sink. He watched her rinse them and put them in the dishwasher. She returned to the table. Rhett grabbed her around the waist, pulled her onto his lap, and nibbled on her neck. Then he put his head against her shoulder and sighed.

“What’s wrong, Rhett?”

“Just tired, baby. Someone kept me up half the night, and then I had to work in the barn. I’m exhausted.”

Cin got off his lap and put her hand out to him. “Then you need to go to bed. I’ll get going before it snows.”

“This isn’t how I wanted this to go. But I am so tired. I promise, I’ll make it up to you.”

“Damn right, you will, Morrison. Get some rest.”

“Hey, how about going to Nick’s Saturday?”

“I’d love it.”

“I’ll pick you up at twelve-thirty and we’ll get our trees.” He yawned. “Damn, I’m sorry, Cin.”

“Don’t be. Get some rest and I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He closed his eyes and drifted off.

The next day, Lucinda stood in the kitchen waiting for Rhett. He had called to apologize for falling asleep and asked if she still wanted to get a tree.

“Well, of course, I do. Don’t you?”

“I do, but I wanted to make sure you weren’t mad.”

“Rhett? Why would I be mad? You work hard and were tired. It happens. Besides, we had a wonderful shower together or did you forget?”

“Hell no, I didn’t forget. One of my best showers.”

“Just one of them?”

“Any shower we share will be the best.”

“Good save.”
