Rhett chuckled. “I’ll be there around twelve-thirty. Dress warm, darlin’, it’s cold.”

“I’ll see you then.”

Saturday, she waited for him, and her nerves were a wreck. Why, she didn’t know. Yes, she did. She was nervous about falling for him. Sure, he said a man shouldn’t leave her because she couldn’t have kids, but that could change. A person doesn’t realize how much that means to have their own kids and he could change his mind. Rhett was a good man, and he deserved kids of his own. So why was he with her?

“Sex?” Lucinda shook her head. She sure hoped that wasn’t why he was sticking around.

At twelve-thirty, she heard a vehicle pull up, and looked out the back window to see Rhett emerging from his truck. He glanced around then headed up the steps. She opened the door before he could knock.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hi.”

Their eyes met, then he leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.

“I’m so sorry.”

“Stop. It’s fine. You were tired. I get that. I get tired too. Some days seem a lot longer than others.”

“Okay. If you’re ready, we can get going. Hey, Tigger, buddy.” Rhett squatted to rub the dog’s ears.

Lucinda pulled her coat on then tugged the beanie on her head. Rhett took her hand, led her out to the truck, and opened the door for her.

“You’re so polite.”

He chuckled. “My mama would take a switch to me if I wasn’t.”

“Surely not.”

“No, but I’m sure what she would say to me would be just as bad. She raised me to be respectful to all people, but especially women.”

“I think I like your mom.”

“She’d like you. Uh, she did ask if you’d like to join the family for Christmas?”

“In Wyoming?”

“Yes. Grant is flying him and Jessa to Nashville, and he offered to fly me to Wyoming. I come back on the twenty-sixth. Since Christmas is on Thursday, flying back on Friday gives me the weekend to rest before returning to work.”

“That makes sense. It’s nice of Grant to fly you there.”

“It is. I told Mom you probably went to see your parents.”

“I see my mother the weekend before because Garth takes them on a cruise every year.”

“Garth?”

“My stepfather. Mythirdstepfather.”

“Oh, boy.”

“Exactly. I can’t stand him.” Lucinda tilted her head. “I’ll go with you if you go with me.”

“I’ve been duped.”

Lucinda laughed. “Not really. I just thought about it. You don’t have to.”
