“That’ll be a great trip. It will be a full jet. I’m glad Grant offered to drop us off in Wyoming.” Rhett pulled his gloves off.

“I’m sure it will be a lot of fun.”

“Yes. My family is eager to meet Cin.”

“You like her,” Mitzie said.

Rhett removed his hat, raked his fingers through his hair then put it back on his head.

“I do.”

“But?”

“No. There’s no but. We’re trying to slow it down because it seems like it happened fast—” Rhett stopped when Calder and Mitzie laughed.

“It happened fast for us, too, remember? Love is not on a timeline. Take each day as it comes. She’s a great person.” Calder slapped him on the back, took Mitzie’s hand then walked to the tack room.

Rhett nodded as he pulled his gloves on, entered the stall, and returned to work.

The weekend before Christmas, Lucinda stood in the kitchen, wrapping gifts for her mother and… Garth. Rhett was on his way to pick her up, and she felt like she was going to meet her executioner.

She wasn’t this nervous about meeting Rhett’s parents. Not that she didn’t want her mother to meet him. It was Garth and how he’d be around Rhett. The man was not only a creep but also a snob. He looked down his nose at everyone; if he did that to Rhett, they’d leave.

After she wrapped the gifts, she set them on the bench and waited. Next week, the kennels and grooming would be closed to new appointments, but the dogs there now would be taken care of by staff.

Lucinda had faith in her staff. They only had to feed and water them. Lucinda believed everyone should be home for Christmas. Even though she knew that wasn’t possible for some.

On the drive to her mother’s, Rhett seemed quiet. She reached for his hand, and he glanced at her.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I’m fine. Are you?”

“Not really. I dread you meeting Garth.”

Rhett chuckled. “Don’t worry about it, darlin’. I can handle myself.”

“I know. I wish the day was over already.”

“If it gets uncomfortable, we’ll go.”

“Then just turn around because, trust me, it will be very uncomfortable.”

Rhett squeezed her hand. “We’ll be fine.”

“I hope so,” she whispered.

“What did you get them?” He nodded to the packages on her lap.

“I got her a scarf because she loves them, and I got him aftershave. Mom told me what to get. I knew what it was because I think he bathes in it.”

“I don’t know why some people have to do that.”

“Women do it too with perfume. A person’s perfume or cologne shouldn’t enter a room before they do.”

“True.”
