“All right. Goodnight, everyone.” She left the room.

Rhett watched her walk up the stairs until she disappeared. Then he looked at Nate to see him staring at him with a grin and shrugged.

Nate laughed. “I know that look.”

Rhett glanced at his mother and father, but they were talking.

“I don’t know how to tell her.”

“You say I love you.”

“Fuck you, Nate,” Rhett snapped, then laughed when Nate did.

“Just tell her. You can wait until you get back to Montana because it will be an uncomfortable trip if she’s not speaking to you.”

“Thanks a hell of a lot. Why do I bother talking to you?”

“I’m your big brother. I’m giving you brotherly advice.”

“You know what you can do with your advice.”

“Boys? No arguing,” their mother said.

“Yes, ma’am,” both men said.

An hour later, Rhett got to his feet and arched his back. Sitting on the floor was hard, but it was the best place for assembling toys.

“I’m going to bed. I’ll see you in the morning. Goodnight. I love you.” Rhett headed for the stairs.

“Goodnight, son. We love you too.”

Rhett smiled when Nate said, ‘Whatever,’ and laughed. He knew Nate loved him. They’d been close since Rhett was born. Nate always included him in things when they were growing up, and Rhett idolized him.

He walked to his room at the top of the landing, opened the door, and entered. The light of the moon coming through the window splayed across the bed, and he could see Cin under the blankets. Then he heard them rustle.

“Did I wake you?”

“No. I was waiting for you.”

He sat on the bed and touched her hair as he looked at the clock.

“Merry Christmas, darlin’,” he whispered as he leaned down to kiss her lips.

“Merry Christmas. Do you think Santa was good to you?”

“I was a good boy.” When she snorted, he drew back from her. “What?”

“Nothing. Come to bed, cowboy.”

“Santa brought you something.”

“What?”

“You’ll see in the morning.”

“It is morning.”
