Rhett walked with her to the staircase, but she went upstairs alone. She hoped this day would end soon so they could leave early tomorrow morning.

She entered the kitchen the following morning to see Rhett and his family. Rhett stood and walked to her.

“You didn’t even hear me come to bed. You must have been tired.”

“Uh, yes. I am ready to go, though.”

“I am too. I was waiting for you. I’ll get your bags. Then we can go. We need to meet Grant in an hour.”

Lucinda nodded but said nothing. What could she say? She wouldn’t tell him that she had heard him but feigned sleep. She tossed and turned most of the night once she finally did fall asleep. She had to tell him it was over once they returned to Clifton.

Rhett helped her with her coat, and after hugging everyone, they walked out the back door, and he held her hand while she got into his truck. She watched him walk around the front of the vehicle, keeping his eyes on her through the windshield. He opened the door and slid onto the seat.

Lucinda could feel his eyes on her, but she didn’t look at him. She heard him sigh, then he started the truck and drove them to the airport. By the time they landed back in Clifton, it was late in the day.

Rhett wasn’t sure what was wrong but was confident it wasn’t because she was tired. To say he was confused would be an understatement. She’d been fine yesterday.Women.

Once they disembarked, got their luggage, and thanked Grant, Rhett and Cin walked to his truck.

When he drove to her house, he parked and glanced at her.

“Can I come in?”

“Yes. For a few minutes. I want to talk to you.”

“Shit, that’s never good,” he muttered as he opened the door and stepped out.

As he walked around the front of the truck, he saw she had gotten out and walked toward him. She wouldn’t look at him, and it scared him. He reached for her bags, but she shook her head.

They stood on the porch as she dug her keys from her purse, opened the door, and entered the kitchen. They removed their coats and hats and hung them up. Then he followed her to the living room.

He watched as she sat on the sofa and sat beside her.

“What’s going on, Cin?”

“Rhett, I don’t think this is working—”

“What’s not working? Us?”

“Yes.”

“You want to tell me why?”

When she shrugged, he wanted to shake her. He touched her hand, but she pulled it away.

“What did I do, Cin?”

“Nothing—”

“Nothing? But yet, you don’t want to see me anymore. Something happened, and I have the right to know. You don’t break up with someone for no damn reason.”

“It’s not working.”

“It was…workinguntil now,” he growled as he got to his feet.

Cin stood, and her eyes narrowed as she stared at him.
