“I think I’ll join you.” Penelope smiled.

“Sounds good to me, sweetheart.” Nate took her hand and led her into the house.

Rhett and Lucinda followed them inside, removing their coats, hats, and scarves.

“A shower does sound good,” Rhett said.

“Yes, it does. We need to warm up.”

“Then let’s do it, Cin. I’m cold, and I know you are.”

Lucinda nodded. “Lead the way, cowboy.”

Later, Lucinda saw it was close to nine and everyone sat in the living room, watching Christmas movies.

“I’m going to get a beer.” Rhett got to his feet.

“I’m hungry. I’m going to make a turkey sandwich.” Nate headed for the kitchen.

“I’m sorry to see you go tomorrow, Cinda,” Beatrice said.

“I’ve had a wonderful time.” She stood. “I want to get some more water.”

As Lucinda headed for the kitchen to refill her glass, she stopped when she heard Rhett and Nate talking. She didn’t want to interrupt, so she turned to go back to the living room when Nate’s words stopped her.

“My daughter seems taken with you.”

“I love my niece and nephew.”

“You need a couple of those rugrats of your own.”

“I’d love to have a few—”

Lucinda gasped and placed her hand over her mouth. Hedidwant his own children. Well, of course, he did. Most men do. She knew he was just like the others, but she’d been hoping he told her the truth when he said it didn’t matter. She quickly made her way back to the living room.

“I’m, uh, not as thirsty as I thought,” she said as she sat on the sofa.

“Are you all right, Cinda?” Beatrice asked her.

“Yes. I need to go to bed.” She tried to force a smile but failed miserably.

“I think we all do.” Nathanial smiled.

When Rhett entered the room with Nate, she refused to look at him. He sat beside her and took her hand, but she pulled it away.

“I’m sorry, but I think I’m going upstairs and get some sleep.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes, just tired.”

“I’ll help you upstairs,” Rhett said as he rubbed her back.

“No!” She cleared her throat. “I’m sorry, but no. There’s no reason for you to go.”

Rhett frowned at her but stood to help her up.

Lucinda smiled. “I just need some sleep.”
