“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry? Sorry for what?”

“I can’t do this.”

“You’re telling me that no matter what I tell you, it’s over?”

“I know it hurts now, but it’s for the best.”

“For whom? You? Because it’s not the best for me. I want to be in your life.”

“It’s not fair to you. It’s not fair to any man. I have to live with it. You don’t.” She shrugged. “I’ve had years to get used to it, but you haven’t.”

“Shouldn’t that be my decision?” He walked to where his hat hung and put it on. “I am not giving up on this. On us. You love me whether or not you admit it.”

“Please go.”

“Right.” He opened the door, stepped onto the porch, and closed the door. He stood on the porch, took a deep breath, walked down the steps, climbed into the truck, and drove onto the road.

This definitely hadn’t turned out the way he had hoped. How was he going to be without her? He never felt this way about anyone; she didn’t want him. Stepping on the gas, he sped down the road, swearing the entire way.

Lucinda leaned against the door as tears rolled down her face. She shouldn’t have answered the door. Sure, he felt that way now, but what about in the future?

Endometriosis causesinfertility or reduced fertility. It could cause damage to surrounding organs, pain during urination, chronic inflammation, and more. Her world fell apart when she had to have a hysterectomy at such a young age, but she had no choice. She had been in so much pain. It had about killed her to do it. She took a while to accept it, so how could she expect a man to give up his dream of having children? How could she expect a man, anyman, to do it?

“Then you shouldn’t have gotten involved with Rhett,” she said.

On Friday, she opened the kennels and grooming areas, flipping lights on as she made her way through the place. She smiled as she fed and watered the dogs, then headed for her office.

Being Friday, she hoped it would go fast. She had no plans for the weekend. Staying inside was best since another snowstorm was predicted.

Sitting at her desk, she stared at the computer screen, not seeing a thing. All she could see was Rhett. She couldn’t get him out of her mind.

“Hey,” Erin said from the doorway.

“Hey.”

“I’m going to get busy grooming. I’m hoping today goes fast.”

“Me too. I look forward to doing nothing this weekend after we close today.”

“I am too. We’re taking the tree down this weekend.”

“That reminds me, I need to take the one in the lobby down. Maybe I’ll do it tomorrow.”

Erin nodded and then left the room.

Lucinda hated the thought of not seeing Rhett anymore. He was the love of her life, but she could never have him in hers. She had to live without having children. Rhett didn’t.Shouldn’t that be his decision?

“You live with it. Maybe he would.” She shook her head. She was so scared to have him and then lose him. “You already did, dumbass, and you’re miserable.”

Saturday, Lucinda sat on the sofa flipping through channels to find something to watch. Nothing appealed to her. She picked up a pillow and hugged it to her. Tigger lay at her feet.

When her cellphone vibrated from the table, she reached for it and saw her mother’s face.

“Hi, Mom.”
