“Lucinda, honey, how are you?”

“Fine. How was the cruise?”

“It was nice. How are you and Rhett doing?”

“Uh, we broke up.”

“What? Why?”

“It was best.”

“For whom?”

“I can’t ask him to give up kids, Mom.”

“Did he break up with you over that?”

Lucinda was surprised to hear the anger in her mother’s voice.

“No. I broke it off with him, but it is because of that.”

“That is the craziest thing I’ve heard. I could see it when he looked at you. He loves you, Lucinda. He knows, right?”

“Yes. I told him before we got serious.”

“And yet, he stayed with you.”

“Yes, but I heard him talking with his brother.” She told her mother about the conversation between Nate and Rhett and what Rhett told her about the rest of his talk with his brother.

“Did you ever stop to think that he’s being honest? He’s not going to say it doesn’t matter if it does. He stayed, Lucinda. I think you’re making a mistake.”

“I don’t know.”

“I like him, Lucinda. He seems like an upright man. You could do worse.”

“I have. I’m just scared. What if he changes his mind later?”

“I doubt that. Talk to Rhett. If he’s willing to adopt, then grab hold of that man and don’t let go. I have a feeling he’ll be happy with adoption as long as you are. Honey, you deserve happiness after all you’ve been through. Lucinda, any marriage can end. Look at me. It’s never a good reason.”

“But if I don’t marry him, I don’t have to worry about it.”

“Absolutely ridiculous. You don’t want to go through life alone. You don’t need a man to make you happy, but you deserve happiness.”

“And what about you, Mom? Don’t you deserve happiness?”

“I am happy, honey. Garth is good to me. You know I hate being alone.”

“I know. Hey, let’s get together for lunch next Saturday. Just you and me. You could come here, or we could meet somewhere.”

“I’d love it. Let me know for sure. You remember what I said, Lucinda. Rhett is the man for you. I’ll talk to you soon, honey. Bye.” She disconnected.

Lucinda set her phone down and thought about the conversation. Surrogacy was out of the question. She’d read too many horror stories. There are a lot of successful stories, but she always felt so many things could go wrong. The mother could change her mind, even though they signed a contract, and a legal battle was the last thing she needed. She knew it had happened before, and she wasn’t willing to do that.

No. If not having children didn’t scare her enough, the thought that a surrogate could fight her for her baby was much scarier. She was better off not going that route.

The father also had rights for the child, but who wanted to take the chance? It would kill Lucinda to get so close to having her baby and have to fight for it.

It wasn’t worth it to her. She was too much of a wuss to do it. She could always try to adopt on her own. She was financially secure and ran her own business, so she should be able to do it.
