“Yes, of course.”

“Well, we keep in touch through email…”

Lucinda could see where this was going. She suspected Heidi was calling because she had heard about Lucinda seeing Rhett.

“Just ask me, Heidi. Stop beating around the bush.”

“Fine. Are you dating Rhett?”

“And if I am?”

“I’m just wondering.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to snap.”

“What’s wrong?”

Lucinda told Heidi everything that happened between her and Rhett. When she finished, she heard Heidi sigh.

“Lucinda, I thought you were smarter than that.”

“Than what? To get involved with Rhett?”

Heidi’s laugh came across the line.

“No. He’s a wonderful man. You’d be crazy not to. I said that because you can’t see what is right in front of you. Rhett loves you.”

“How would you know?”

“You said he told you.”

“Yes, but that doesn’t mean he does.”

“Girl, you are crazy. Rhett wouldn’t say it if he didn’t mean it.”

“I know. I believe he does.”

“Good. Talk to him.”

“I’m going to.”

“I regret letting him go, but we can’t go back. I am happy with John, and maybe I wasn’t supposed to be with Rhett, so you could. He’s a good man, Cinda.”

They talked for a while longer and agreed to keep in touch. Lucinda knew it wasn’t a call out of the blue. She and Heidi hadn’t spoken in over a year. Gossip was alive and well in Clifton, Montana.

A week passed before Rhett was able to see Cin. As he drove to her place, he was man enough to admit he was scared to death.

He slowed to pull into her driveway. Thank God, someone plowed it. The town had been at a standstill. The area had gotten ten inches of snow in one night and ice the next day.

But Rhett was sure the town would be buzzing today since everyone would be able to get out.

Opening the door, he stepped out and walked to the door. He raised his hand to knock, but it opened, and he stared at the woman he’d always love.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi. Come in.” She opened the door wider for him to enter.
