When he stepped across the threshold, he removed his hat and coat and placed them on the bench.

Cin motioned for him to go to the living room, but he shook his head, nodded for her to go, and followed her. She sat on the sofa, and he took a seat beside her. He raked his fingers through his hair.

“Cin…” He cleared his throat. “Cin, all the way here, I kept trying to find the words to convince you that I’m in this with you for as long as you want me, but they just didn’t come.”

“You just said them.”

“Yeah, I suppose I did.” He took her hand; thankful she didn’t pull away. “I want to be with you for the rest of my life. We can adopt or not. It’s entirely up to you. I know if I have you, I have everything I need.”

“I’m used to it, Rhett, but it hasn’t sunk in yet for you. I know adoption is the only way for me, but you have a choice. I’m not angry anymore about not having kids. I got over that a long time ago.” She took his hand. “It’s still fresh for you. I don’t want you doing something you’ll regret.”

“Cin, it’s not going to change. Do you think I’d be here if I didn’t want you?”

“I’m scared.”

“I am too.” He tucked her hair behind her ear. “But we can be strong together.”

“If you’re sure.”

“I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life.” He kissed her lips and then gazed into her eyes. “Tell me you love me.”

“I love you, Rhett.”

“And I’m so happy you do, darlin’.” He wrapped his hand around her nape, leaned in, and kissed her lips.

“I want kids, Rhett.”

“We’ll have them. We’ll adopt as many as you want.”

“You have no idea how many I want.”

“How many?”

“Ten, at least.”

“What?”

Cin laughed. “I’m kidding. Maybe five. I love kids.”

“I could do that. I want you. We can do this, Cin.”

She stared at him and then nodded. “I believe we can.”

Rhett grinned, pulled her onto his lap, and kissed her lips deeply, then slowly raised his and gazed into her eyes.

“I have missed you so much,” he whispered.

“Same here.”

“I need you, baby.”

Cin stood, took his hand, and led him to her bedroom.

Lucinda led Rhett to her room, entered, and closed the door behind them. She turned to look at him, and her heart melted. This man was her everything, and if it came to pass that he wanted to leave, she’d accept it and let him go. Knowing she had his love for a while would be enough. It would have to be. She would never hold him back.

But as she stared into his eyes, she knew he wouldn’t leave her. She could see the love in his eyes when he looked at her.
