“YourHeidi?”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes, I do, and yes, it was her.”

“Why?”

He listened as she told him the conversation, and he grinned.

“So, she wishes she’d never left me. Huh.”

“But she also said she’s happy with John.”

“Oh, I know. I’m just thinking how we all think we’re doing the right thing by breaking up with someone, then find out it wasn’t what you thought it would be.” He shook his head. “I’m glad she did, though. I wouldn’t have you.”

“I don’t believe that. We were meant to be together, or don’t you believe that?”

“Yeah, I suppose I do. She broke up with me for a reason. Her reason was John. Mine was you.”

“I’m so sorry, Rhett.”

“For what?”

“Breaking up with you. I should have talked to you about it.”

“Yes, you should have. I had no idea what was going on. I thought we had a great time over Christmas, but then you broke up with me the day after.”

“I know. I feel so bad about it.”

“It’s over, Cin. We’re fine. Right?”

She smiled at him. “Yes.”

“Good. That’s all I needed to hear.” He kissed her temple. “But, we will always discuss things if there’s a problem.”

“Yes, I agree.”

Rhett was happy they worked it out. He didn’t know what he would do without her. He fell hard for her. Harder than for any other woman. Including Heidi. He would give Cin anything she wanted to make her happy, and never want to leave him. God knew he’d never leave her and couldn’t wait to see what the future brought.

Lucinda leaned her head on his shoulder and smiled. He loved her, and she was so happy he didn’t listen to her telling him it was over. She knew it would never be over for her with this man. She’d love him until she took her last breath. They’d adopt and have a family of their own. She was so ready to take the next step with him. She frowned.

“So, now what?”

“What do you mean?”

“Um, where do we go from here?”

“Well, since we talked about adopting kids, I’d say we’re talking about getting married.”

She sat up. “Seriously?”

“Isn’t that what people in love do? I know single people can adopt, but they will be our kids, Cin.”

“I haven’t heard a marriage proposal.”

“I knew that was coming.” Rhett grinned.
