“I’m teasing but let me do this.”

“Do what?” A frown marred his brow.

“This.” She took his hand in hers and stared into his eyes. “Rhett Morrison, will you marry me?”

He chuckled. “Shouldn’t I be asking you?”

“No. I want you to know that I want this.”

“I do, darlin’. You wouldn’t be with me if you didn’t.”

“But I want you to know that I want to marry you and adopt a bunch of kids.”

“We can do that.”

“Why haven’t you asked me about the money?”

“Because it’s none of my business, and I figured you’d tell me when you wanted to. It doesn’t matter to me, Cin. I have money. I’m not marrying you for yours.”

“I know that. I was only twenty when my great-grandmother left me this place and the money. I had no idea she’d do that. My grandmother, her daughter, died in a car accident when she was thirty-five, which destroyed my great-grandmother. I came here to live with her after it happened.”

“Was she your mother’s mother?”

“No, my dad’s. He wasn’t the best son. He didn’t even go to his mother’s funeral. I don’t know what happened, but he never spoke of his grandmother. My mother was going through her second divorce and was in a funk, so I lived with Grammy Mae. I loved her so much. I didn’t think she’d leave me this place and that money.”

“You’re the only one she had.”

“Yes. Once Garth learned I had that much money, he always made advances. I don’t know why. I’d never give him any money; my mother doesn’t want it. Besides, Garth has his own. He’s just a greedy man.”

“Don’t ever give him anything, Cin. He’s not a good person.”

“I know. I used some of it to make this into a boarding and grooming kennel. I love my job.”

“I know you do. You have a lot of business, and I can help if you need me to.”

“No, Rhett. You have a job you love; I won’t add to it. I have great help.”

“Yeah, you do. All right.”

“Do you, uh, want to move in here?”

“Do you want me to?”

“I’d love it.”

“Then I will. It’s not like it’s far to drive to work. I’ll tell Calder I’ll be moving out. He hasn’t hired a new foreman yet, so maybe whoever he hires will use the cabin.”

“If, you’re sure.”

“I’m positive. Now, how about we go to bed? I’m exhausted. I haven’t slept much.”

“I haven’t either.” She got to her feet, put her hand out to him, and he took it, stood, and walked upstairs.

Two days later, Rhett knocked on Calder’s door. It opened, and Mitzie smiled at him.

“Hey, Rhett. Come inside.”

“Thanks, Mitzie. Is Calder here?”
