“If he wasn’t the first, who was? Nobody else has tried…”

His mouth dried. Surely notFinn. The gods, especially Zeus, were notorious for disguising themselves to get their rocks off, but Finn wasn’t… He couldn’t be… Gany would have been able totell, if not sometime during the months of flirting and pining, then today, when they’d finally kissed.

No god had ever kissed as well as Finn.

Apollo jerked his head at the bakery, which still had a cloud of smoke hovering over its roof. “No?”

Gany’s jaw dropped. “Myoven? That wasintentional? One of you did that onpurpose? You could havekilledsomeone!”Finn.Gany glanced back at the ambulance. Finn wasn’t there anymore.

“Well, we had to dosomethingto get you out of there,” Apollo said testily. “We’re not allowed to go inside the damned place, any more than we’re allowed in TD’s house.”

“What did youdo?”

He shrugged. “Wasn’t me. Hephaestus arranged it. Modified one of Zeus’s lightning bolts and shot it into the oven from outside the building. So he’s not technically in violation of the rules.” Apollo’s brow darkened. “Bloody irritating, though. If Artemis had done the job right, we wouldn’t have to split the points three ways.”

“Points? What— Oh, for the Fates’ sake. Is this about that stupid app?”

Apollo’s face took on a shifty expression worthy of Hermes. “It’s not stupid.”

“No?” Gany gestured to Apollo in his uniform. “Are you even an EMT?”

He jutted his chin out. “I could be. Iinventedmedicine!”

Gany folded his arms. “Uh huh. What are you supposed to be doing for your restitution?” Apollo looked away, mouth set mulishly. “Apollo? Where do you work?”

“I’m an orderly,” he muttered, “at an assisted living facility. I have to wear rubber-soled shoes. And aname tag.”

“So?”

“It’s not evenmy name.”

Despite himself, a smile tugged at Gany’s lips. “What does it say?”

“Bob,” Apollo spat. “Me! Do I look like a Bob to you? Everyone should know who I am. I hadaltars.Priestesses. Oracles! This is insupportable!”

“Did you ever think that your victims foundyourbehavior insupportable?”

Apollo looked at Gany, his brow furrowed. “What?”

“Your victims. The people you hurt.”

“I never hurt anybody!”

“Oh really? What about Marsyas? He was flayed alive forlosinga music contest with you.”

“That wasn’t my fault. He shouldn’t have challenged me.”

“You nailed his skin to atree!” When Apollo just shrugged, Gany said, “What about Daphne?”

“What about her? She’simmortal.”

“She’s atree. Seriously, what is it with you and trees?”

“Her leaves areiconic.”

“I doubt that comforts her much, especially when there are bulldozers and climate change, and assholes with pocket knives who can destroy her at any time.” Gany jabbed a finger toward Apollo’s ridiculously broad chest. “The point of the Fates’ decree is for you guys tolearn. Toatone. To become better people.”

“We’re not people,” he said snootily. “We’re gods.”
