No, it’sbeyondthat—beyond any word of happiness that exists.

“Well, I know it’s movie time,” Landon says, his tone somehow full of the same glow as his grin, “but I think we should go get ice cream!”

“Yes!” Rae squeals.

His bright eyes find mine. “Feel like some ice cream, Mrs. Wintermute?”

“Feel like some ice cream, An—Mama?” Rae chimes in.

Even though I’m moved to more tears by the overwhelming love I feel for them, I manage to say, “Ice cream sounds awesome.”

I don’t care that it’s not official just yet: knowing we really will be a cute little family at the ice cream place this time makes my heart soar.

She asks Landon if he’ll give her a piggy-back ride in a minute, trying out his new Daddy title in the process, and of course he agrees. So she hurries off to get ready.

We should do that, too, but after we’ve watched her go, we look at each other.

The adoration between us for her and for each other is almost heart-stopping.

“I love you,” we say at the same time. Then we both smile, laugh, step into an ardent kiss. We can hear Rae gleefully singing a made-up song about being adopted by us, and it makes us smile more.

This is what it’s all about.

Knowing nothing is all goodorall bad, finding the beautiful balance in between, allowing light to shine through the shadows no matter how painfully blinding it can be…that’s what it means to really live.

I hope everyone comes to figure that out the way the three of us have.

I hope everyone can find their freedom, their peace, their forever.

Because one thing is for sure: it’s out there waiting to be found.
