“Enough. Let’s get going. We have decided to try one of the Fae shelters we know of that is close to here,” Drez says as he inclines his head for us to follow him.

“But I thought we were going to see our parents,” I state, only to have him stop and turn to look at me.

“We will, but with everything that has been happening, we thought it would be prudent to first find out what has been going on here before we go knocking on their door.” I frown, seeing the logic behind the plan but wishing that we could go to them instead. “Are you all ready?” he asks, looking around at everyone before once again turning to make his way up an embankment. “Dream, walk next to me.”

I frown. “I’m fine here,” I mutter, only to hear Love giggle. When I glance at her, I see her trying to hold a straight face. She’s clearly not trying too hard, because when I glare at her, she lets it slip and grins openly at me. Suddenly, I smack into something solid and would have fallen back down the embankment if strong arms didn’t grab my upper arms. Squeaking in surprise, I look up to see Drez’s face above mine.

“I wasn’t asking you. We are not back in Eternity Fae. It is dangerous here with things you don’t know anything about, and you can’t use your magic here and our weapons are useless if someone pulls out a gun and shoots you. So, for me to be able to protect you, you will walk next to me.” Drez isn’t a man of many words, but when he does speak, he doesn’t mince his words.

“Argh, okay,” I mutter, which has him letting go of my arms and waiting until I start making my way up. The others are ahead of us, but I know they are all paying attention to what is being said here. “Don’t think you will always get your way.”

“I will get my way when it is necessary,” he replies, not once glancing at me as we finally make it to the road. I see the cars zooming past. I have heard about them and seen pictures, but they don’t make up for the real thing and the noise. I am about to step down from where we are walking, when Drez clamps his hand around my upper arm again.

“Are you trying to kill yourself?” he grunts just as a car zooms past where I would have been. The sudden appearance of the car has me freezing in shock. “Walk on this side.” He guides me to his other side before we continue walking. After walking for a couple minutes, I notice that the men are taller than most of the men I have seen today, not just taller but better looking too.

I know that the humans don’t know that we exist, and one law that all Fae need to abide to is not to share our identity with any human, as it is considered an offense with a high punishment, but when I look around, they seem so harmless. We have been walking for a couple hours when Trek stops across the road from a tall warehouse-looking building. I see him raise his head as he scents out the area, a frown on his face.

“Stay here, I will be right back,” he says as he makes his way across the road.

“What’s wrong?” Love asks as she looks up at Shok questioningly.

“He is just being careful; we can’t just bring three princesses in there without staking out the place and who is inside first.” I hate being called a princess, but at the end of the day, that is what we are. We wait for a couple minutes before Trek makes his way back to us.

“So?” Hope asks as soon as he reaches us.

“We have a problem.” At his serious face, I feel my stomach tensing. We are in a new place completely alien to us, without knowing how to get back, and when we think we have found a way, it seems like obstacles keep appearing in our way. “It seems your parents have gone missing.”

CHAPTER 11

“What?” Hope and Shok say simultaneously. “What do you mean our parents are missing?”

“Come, let’s go inside and they will explain,” Trek says as he inclines his head towards the building behind him. The six of us make our way inside to find about thirty people inside. Looking around, I can tell there are Elves, Werewolves, even two Vampires, which we don’t see much of in Eternity Fae but I know exist here in the city.

“What kind of place is this?” I whisper to Drez.

“If Fae are finding difficulty integrating or have a problem, then we have some of these homes throughout the cities welcoming them among their own people so that we may help,” Drez answers.

“Are there always this many?” I ask, only to have Drez shake his head.

“No, this is more than usual,” he murmurs before we come to a standstill among them.

“I know you,” one of the men in the group says as he points at Shok. “You are one of our sovereign’s men.”

“Where are they? What has happened to them? Why have they disappeared?” a woman asks loudly from the back.

“We don’t know. We have only just gotten here,” Trek says as he lifts his hands for quiet.

“How can you not know? He’s one of the protectors,” the same man says.

“We haven’t been here. We have only just arrived in the city,” Shok says, taking a step forward. “Why do you say that our sovereigns are missing?”

“Because there is a war brewing, and they are not doing anything about it. When there has been requests to meet with them, the requests are denied.” My heart is racing at what they are saying. What if something happened to them? I know that my parents would never let anyone get hurt if it was within their power to stop it.

“They most probably went to Eternity Fae and are hiding there until everything is over,” another man says from the left.

“How dare you? They would never hide. They have always been there for the Fae. If they are not now, that only means that something has happened,” Hope says angrily. “Instead of complaining and inventing stories, have any of you actually tried to find out the truth?”

Most of the people before us lower their heads in embarrassment. Others scowl in anger at Hope’s words. “Those who have been to see them say that they were told the queen and king are in Eternity Fae.”
