But then her eyes fluttered open.

His heart squeezed with relief, and it was like he could breathe again.

Three days later

CHARLIESATONBrian’s lap in the living room, scrolling through the news article he’d wanted her to read.

She skimmed through the story.

According to theLaramie Gazette, Chief of Police Willa Nelson had finally issued a statement. A task force operating out of the DCI’s office had been formed six months ago to look into the alleged ties between the Rios drug cartel, out of Mexico, and several police officers in key positions throughout the Laramie PD, as high ranking as Lieutenant Malcolm Jameson. The probe had started with a few narcotics detectives but had been expanded to include a huge array of civilians working in the organization. Real estate attorney Timothy Alcock had played a key role in using his legal expertise to help the cartel and officers create shell companies to hide behind in purchasing foreclosed homes to use as meth labs, and sites of storage and distribution. Charges included trafficking and selling drugs, prostitution, money laundering and racketeering. Based on DNA recovered from Olsen Ranch A, Detective Seth Olsen was also found to be responsible for several murders, including those of Theodore Williams and Jane Aubrey Dunn. The owner of the ranch, Abel Olsen, was not found to be complicit. An unidentified informant was key to breaking the case and turned over half a million dollars in cartel money. Chief Nelson has pledged to clean up the LPD.

“Wow,” she said in a whisper. The informant was clearly Haley, who was still in an unidentified location. “I had no idea it was so big and deep. Are you all right?”

“Yeah.”

But Brian was an idealist. He couldn’t possibly be fine. “You can tell me.”

He shook his head. “Those cops abused people and their positions. They violated the public trust in every way that counts. They’ve put a stain on the department that won’t go away anytime soon.”

Such a good man.

She kissed his head, pressed her palm to his cheek and ran her thumb over the evening stubble on his face. “Justice will be served. Take comfort in that. I’m just glad this nightmare is over.”

“Me, too. But Chief Nelson still has a lot of work to do with the LPD.”

She slid her fingers through his hair. “You know, I’m still surprised that you called Orson for help.”

A smile pulled at his gorgeous mouth. “I’d do anything for you.”

She believed him and was grateful to have Brian in her corner.

“I need you to do a favor for me tomorrow,” he said.

“Anything. What is it?”

“Help me pick out a kitten. For Kent. I promised to buy him a cat.”

Smiling, she kissed him again. This time on the lips. “It would be my pleasure.”

Putting her down on her feet, he stood. “Go shower and meet me outside. I’ve got a surprise for you.”

“What is it?”

He gently bopped her nose with the tip of his finger. “If I told you, then it wouldn’t be a surprise.”

“I thought we were having dinner.”

“Food is a part of it.”

“How long do I have?” she asked.

“As long as you need.”

She frowned.

“Can you meet me out back in ten?”

“Sure,” she said, but she’d do it in five.
