“Yes.”

“You’re unbelievable.” She pushed me away. “Who is she? What’s so special about her?”

“What?” I chuckled. “Of course you went there.”

“This has nothing to do with us. Or other women. This is someone I’d rather you not interact with. For your own safety. Please.” Why was I even asking her permission? Donata never did what she was told. “This is why you’re always getting in trouble.” When she dug in her heels, I bent down and put her over my shoulder. I didn’t have time to explain to her all the different ways Uncle Jimmy could hurt her.

“Not this again. Are you serious? I’m not a sack of potatoes.” She put out her hands to hold on to the wall as I walked her up the service stairs.

“You’re going to stay in my room until I come get you. Do you understand?” When she didn’t answer, I gave her a loud smack on her butt cheek. “Do you understand?”

“You’re going to pay for this later.” She glared at me when I set her down on my bed.

“Looking forward to it.” I bent down to kiss her.

At the last second, she looked away, and my lips landed on her ear. Fine. If she wanted to play the spoiled brat for now, so be it. Anything was better than her and Uncle Jimmy in the same room. I didn’t care if he told her the truth just to spite me, but I wanted to be the one to tell her. Knowing Uncle Jimmy, he would turn it into something more sinister than it already was. Who the hell was I kidding? No matter who told her or how, she was going to hate me.

My gaze swept down from her face to her pouty lips, to her nipples poking through her T-shirt, and then to her pussy on full display for me. Fucking bad timing. I could be between her legs right now.

“Be a good girl. And stay just like that.”

“Bite me.”

“Later.” I stared at her pussy. When she got my meaning, she brought her legs together. I chuckled. “I promise.”

With all the self-control I could muster, I peeled my gaze away from her and headed out. When I reached the landing, I cursed under my breath then ambled back to the bedroom door. Knowing Donata, she was just on the other side, waiting for the sound of my footsteps to die off.

“I’m sorry, love.” I reached for the top of the door frame and grabbed the key.

The minute the lock clicked, she banged on the door. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

CHAPTER18

She Doesn't Want Him

Luca

“You have my permission to snoop around my bedroom, if you want.” I grinned. Lately, I couldn’t stop doing that when Donata was around.

“I hate you.” Donata slammed her fist on the door again.

Not yet.

I took in a deep breath, then headed downstairs for yet another round with Uncle Jimmy. Dealing with him was exhausting. The minute he spotted me on the stairs, he stood tall and glared at me. There was a time when that look made me want to crawl under the bed. Looking at him now, I couldn’t remember what it was about him that scared me so much.

He was at least a foot shorter than me, and stocky. I swore the little hair he had left on his head had gotten whiter in the last few months. This plan of his to beat the Dons at their own game was finally taking a toll on him. He seemed unhinged.

Unfortunately, the fastest way to get rid of him was to let him vent and scheme. The more I tried to dissuade him, the more he dug his heels in and then it could be hours before he dropped it. It all came down to this idea that the Gallo family should’ve been the ruling family, not the Alferas.

I didn’t much care for their politics. But I did know that the decision was made over a hundred years ago, way before the Gallo Family was part of the five original crime families. We were the last family to be granted ascension into the Society. We had no claim to the so-called throne. But Uncle Jimmy didn’t see it that way. No idea why. All I knew was that this war against Vittoria Salvatore had been going on for decades.

“Did I catch you at a bad time?” he asked in his smoker voice. “Or should I say good time?” He chuckled.

“What do you want?”

“Right down to business. I like that about you.” He shot a glance upstairs. “When you’re married, you’re going to have to be more discreet. Vittoria won’t stand for this.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”
