“But you were?”

“Dad.” She swallowed. “When he had a rough day at work or had too much to drink, he’d get so mad at me for the smallest things.” She clicked her teeth as if none of it was important. Though the pain in her eyes was hard to miss. “He would lock me in the cellar for hours on end. It was so cold and dark. One time, he forgot he’d put me there. I stayed for a whole day before Aunt Vittoria found me.”

“Tell me she made sure he paid for what he did to you.” I fisted my hand under the table.

“Have you met Aunt Vittoria?” She smiled, shaking her head. “She brought me home. I never saw Dad after that. Years later, he had some sort of accident. Aunt Vittoria has been like a mother to me all this time.”

“Where was your real mother in all this?”

“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “I never met her. She took off when I was a baby.”

“I didn’t know that. I’m sorry.” I reached for her chair and slid it closer to me. After a beat, she stood and sat on my lap. She felt so good in my arms. I hated that I had to break her heart. I held her tighter. “Later, I have something I need to tell you.”

“Tell me now.”

“No.” I shook my head, running my hand up her bare thighs. “Not now.”

“Why not?” She curled her body closer to mine.

“Because I’m a selfish asshole. Because all I want right now is to fuck you senseless.” I kissed her neck, then brought her lips down to meet mine.

Blood pumped hard through me as I considered all the things I wanted to do to her today. I bent down and sucked on her nipples through her T-shirt. “You can finish your breakfast later.”

“I was already done.” She panted a breath, running her fingers through my hair. “Luca, I need you.”

“I’m here.”

“Sir?” Alfred cleared his throat.

“Jesus,” I mumbled on Donata’s shoulder.

Alfred had a way to say so much with just that single word—sir? Or maybe it was my own conscience. Getting caught in my own kitchen, making out with my mark like I was some kind of horny teenager, was a prime example of someone who had no idea what he was doing anymore.

“What is it, Alfred?” I turned to face him, while Donata slowly got off my lap and moved to her seat.

“You have a visitor.”

“A visitor?” I met Donata’s gaze. “Pinna?”

“I haven’t texted her yet.” She shrugged.

“No, sir. Your usual visitor is here.” Alfred cocked his eyebrow as if saying, snap out of it.

Oh, fuck me. Uncle Jimmy was here.

As soon as Alfred saw recognition in my eyes, he nodded. “I’ll tell him you’ll be a minute.”

“Thank you, Alfred.”

I should’ve known that after his ultimatum, he would want to check on my progress in person. Shit. I couldn’t let him see Donata. He would ruin everything.

“Do you trust me?” I rose to my feet and helped Donata up.

“Why?”

“It’s best if this visitor doesn’t see you here.”

“You want me to hide?”
