“Watch the door. Here.” I give her my phone. “Press this button for Tony. Twice.”

I drop to my knees and grab Field by the shirt. “What did you get for being vile to my woman? This can be fast, or agonizing.” I dig into his wound, carving the knife into him, slow, deep enough to show flesh. “Who’s the client? I’m thinking not Popov, not entirely. I want the puppet master.”

“Fuck you.” A bubble of blood appears on his lips.

“Not my type. I like them breathing and named Rose. Who’s behind this? It’s not just your life. What I’m doing to you? I’ll do worse to your family. Your children. Lover. Ex-wife, your father. You get the drift.” I stab into his belly and dig further inside the bullet wound. “Who is it?”

He howls, and then he whispers it. One name.

I end his pathetic life with a bullet to the head. Just. Like. That. Fuck. Rose really does have killer instincts.

When I look up, she’s watching intently. Her gaze drops to my groin. “You’re hard.”

“You’re hot.” I stalk up to her and spin her back to my front, pulling down her pants as I grip her hair, a bloody handprint on her ass cheek from my touch. I release myself, the ache and need almost too much, only to find her red, swollen, wet.

“And wet,” I whisper as I slam into her.

I take her standing, hand in her hair, bloodied hand on her hip, holding her trapped. I take her hard and fast and furious, and when we both come, I straighten her up, spin her back around, and take her mouth in a tender kiss.

I fucking love this woman.

She finds me later that night in the living room on the sofa, and I pull her down to sit on my lap. She’s stolen another of my shirts, so I know the brat’s cunt is wet, but I tuck her into me, pulling a handmade throw over us.

“Why aren’t you in bed? What is it?”

I sigh. “A name Field said. The fact that Popov wasn’t there.” She doesn’t ask more questions, and I think I might just love her more for that. “I just…I need to think on this.”

She wiggles her butt against me. “I’m here.”

I bury my face in her still-damp, sweet-smelling hair. “The Russian not being there, Rush and the arrest, and these small, weak players risking my retribution…”

“You don’t think this Popov is involved?”

I sigh. “I’m not sure. He definitely had business with Finnegan, and Queenstown isn’t his territory.”

She twists to face me. “But if you weren’t there, it could be.”

“Yes. He made a deal with the devil, I think. Because…” I swallow. “The name Field gave was Adelaide.”

Chapter16

Rose

Push the wedding back? I’m so angry, not even Genius can soothe me with silly jokes and delicious gelato.

Nikolai leans against the door of the bedroom the moment my friend leaves to find Rush, irritation dark on his face.

“If you don’t want—” I start.

“Someone only suggested postponing and you stormed off. Fuck. You know this is something big, and it’s to do with keeping you and Rush safe and my empire in one piece.”

I try not to let the pain seep in bone deep, but it’s hard because he’s right. “Our marriage doesn’t have to be completely the same thing.”

“Popov isn’t big, but he’s got power, and he’s the type who doesn’t forgive or forget.”

I know what he’s going to say. I was in the room while they plotted and schemed and went over the information. I was there when Rush wasn’t, and he, Tony, and Belucci in some old school conference call discussed an elaborate plan to save Rush’s ego, to keep him and Genius four alarm protected, and maybe push the wedding back. Again.
